Just to follow up, I've followed mse's suggestions and the gps now works a treat - very good signal, gets locked to satellites real quick.

| Neat idea with the steel wheel nuts bankz. I used few washers in the end as zsd suggested and it worked a treat. |

Nope, no sunroof on mine. But I bought one of the below external magnetic antennas and will try Mike's approach mentioned earlier. Will report how it goes.
