Hella plugs (and sockets, of course) will be up to that task.
It's a real shame that we have this legacy of cigarette lighter sockets, as Hella plugs are far more robust. There are far too many phone/sat nav moulded chargers around to make a wholesale swap a practical proposition though, unfortunately. I will HAVE to keep the cigarette socket as you say phone charger, ipod, Surefire charger all use that style. 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

Previously I swapped out to a Hella socket and made up an adapter lead to convert the Hella to Phone charger socket.

personally, i used the hella type and they didnt convince me
switched to speakon connectors for all heavy appliances long tim eago and am totally happy with them.
made to last, lock in place, rated at 30 amps, 4 wire and widely available at every PA/sound shop. Neutrik also does a power connector version which have the same design but are rated a bit higher. even more expensive and my experience the speakon works as well. the only thing i do is solder the sockets instead of using the faston connectors. Dont like the vibrations in a car to trust the crimp connectors too much. 2 cents |

Standard 12 volt sockets are rated at 16 or 20 amps.
Now is that a continuous rating or a short term rating? Thinking of its use as a cigar type socket it draws maximum power for a short period of time (less then 1 minute) then cuts out. So will they cope with 20 amps continuous?? The hella type plug and socket for a fridge typical draw about 3 amps so far never had a problem with it. The standard Hella plug is more vibration resistant then normal 12 volt plug. If you want a high current draw how about small Anderson connectors such as SB50. Rated at continuous 50 amps. Brendan |
