Front brakes getting hot and lots of brake dust
Hi, I have a 2002 defender 90, I get a squeaky noise in low speeds and light braking, also both front hubs get quite hot to the touch compared to the back ones after 15 min of driving. I have lifted both wheels of the ground and get a bit of rubbing brake noise when I spin them, no play in the bearings. Both front wheels are covered in brake dust, none on rear Any idea what it could be? Thank you

Sticking/seized calliper, worn pads? Cheap brakes, driving like a hallion? Mr. Green

Brake pads have a lot left in them, iv had the defender about 7 months and just started to have this problem
What would cause both callipers to go at same time?

It's a bit of an odd failure but I wonder if the brake bias valve has failed and isolated the rear brakes, so that all of your braking effort is being done by the fronts? This would work them harder and seems to suit the symptoms that you're describing. Darren

Best course of action would be to strip the front brakes down, clean, lubricate the sliders and reassemble.

No sliders on defenders brakes of that vintage, as they are 4 piston calipers on the front and twin on the rear.

Brake servo "push rod" (adjustable threaded thing inside it) over adjusted? It doesn't take 1 turn or so to be over, thus resulting in the brakes being permanently pressurised (giving the symptoms of leavig your foot on the brake pedal and thus the pads getting very hot)

I overadjusted mine once and it nearly ground the vehicle to a halt as they got so hot and I guess expanded to the point of seizing the brakes up.

"Is the brake booster "push rod" (adjustable threaded thing inside it) over tightened? It doesn't take 1 lap or so to finish, causing the brakes to be permanently pressurized (giving the symptoms of leaving your foot on the brake pedal and therefore the pads getting very hot)

. The vehicle stalled because they got really hot and I'm guessing they expanded to the point of binding the brakes."

I very much agree with these indications, it is not the first time that it has happened in a brake repair or that rod has come out very tigh
