Just blew compressed air in the top and a nice flow of air out the bottom so doesn’t seem to be. Externally it’s quite clean. 1989 Land Rover 110 CSW

No harm in crossing things off. The only sign of HG failure I see is it running warmer than normal. I don’t want to just take the head off for the sake of it but if everything else reasonable is knocked off the list then it’s probably better to bit the bullet and do it. At least I’ll know it’s done then and don’t (or shouldn’t) have to worry about it for a while

I have reassembled it now and filled it with water. Will go for a drive tomorrow to see but I’m not expecting it to have magically fixed the issue. I’m definitely leaning towards the strip the head off approach. May do a bit of reading up on hg replacements tonight. 1989 Land Rover 110 CSW

Btw where would people consider it safe to operate. If the gauge remains in the white section? Black section before red? I’m not planning on running it in the red. 1989 Land Rover 110 CSW

200 defenders normally sit just above halfway on the gauge.

You can buy the wee infrared temperature guns so cheap now this might help? New parts now are utter crap and don’t last long. I only buy genuine or reputable branded now, too many comebacks.


Is the top radiator hose rock hard when it’s warm? I like Victor Reinz gaskets, I’d buy the top end gasket set with the manifold studs too.

Just make sure you get one the same thickness as what’s on it now. You can get the heads ported and it does make a difference turners again do a lovely job of it. I use Powermax engineering in moneymore in the north, I couldn’t recommend anyone closer sorry, although I know they do a lot of southern fellas Japanese race and rally engines.

It used to be bang on 12 but it’s moving up a bit further hence my concern. Hasn’t left the white yet but sounds like something is not normal.

Yea, I know the guns you mean. I’ve often used them in work. Might be no harm in picking one up.

Top hose is still soft and you could hold it for a few seconds.

Sadly since brexit, expensive Uk items have become very expensive and sending parts off from refurbished is an absolute pain as you have to pay duties to send it to the Uk and more to get it back. Then you have to go and claim them back.

The engineering shop I priced is only 40 minutes away and it’s the go to place around here. Thankfully I’ve never had to go to them in the past. Thanks for the second recommendation of PowerMax Engineering. The are only 3 hours away so could take the spin if needs be. 1989 Land Rover 110 CSW

Did you measure the engine temp with a hand held infrared thermometer? How do you know your gauge is correct?

I haven’t. Nick got me thinking about this too. I’ll see what I can rig up or just buy a gun. I will have a look at doing something later. Might have a thermocouple or something hanging around here. 1989 Land Rover 110 CSW
