Great to hear he's been recovered and hope the repairs go well.

Forgive my ignorance, but a quick Goggle suggests Airtags are Apple - am I barking up the right tree here Question

Thumbs Up Rob

Yes Airtag is an Apple thing but no doubt there will be something similar for Samsung, etc??

Good news. I have an AirTag in mine, somewhere tucked away and have removed the speaker, so good to know the tech works. Hopefully you’ll be back on the road soonish.

Could you explain “ have removed the speaker”?
Cheers

Because AirTags were being used by naughty/nasty people to track others, say by slipping an AirTag into a bag or coat pocket, Apple added a small speaker to later AirTags so that anyone ‘pinging’ the tag, tracking it as a ‘lost item’, it makes a sound. This is great if someone is tracking you and you don’t know - every time an iPhone come into range the airtag will make a noise and you’ll hear it and be alerted to the fact it’s on you. Not so stealthy.

If you’re using it as a tracking device in a vehicle with the speaker still in place, when you set the airtag to let you know its location (I.e. ‘find my AirTag’), it’ll makes a noise alerting the thieving oik to the fact that there’s an airtag in the vehicle. F*ckface may take the time to locate it and throw it away.

If you take the speaker out there is nothing to indicate the AirTag’s presence so hopefully it remains tucked away in the vehicle and you can track it

Of course the noise may freak said scum of the earth out causing them to carefully park your vehicle up and run away. I guess it’s down to personal prefermace if you want to alert them to possible tracking….

Do a YouTube search for ‘remove AirTag speaker’….

HTH.

Yes that really helps.
I use AirTags. I understand now that mine are the early ones without speakers.
Thank you.

Update

I have the 130 back from the forensics. Need to sort a few bits out which won't be cheap....

But the police have arrested and charged a number of people and it is expected to go to court. Of course won't say it was because of any evidence collected from my 130, but whatever I take as a positive

Glad you got it back, and as difficult as it may be, you can choose what to do next. The ball is in your court. Thumbs Up

Talking of courts - I am pleased that they have caught someone and that a case may go to court.

If so, I hope that the judge orders a black handkerchief…

Social Media probably takes this kind of 'news' out of perspective, but you do wonder what impact 'the law' has one these individuals.

If I was to make 'a mistake' and ended up facing 'the law' my life would seriously change: I would loose my job, my house, my money, my pension, possibly my family. Obviously this is a big incentive to not brake the law (apart from not being scum to start with).

However if you are in the habit of nicking cars, you are probably in some sort of trouble already and would a brush with the law make such a difference? For all you know they already had a few convictions.

To be honest it must be really depressing to work in the justice system..

Having lived in America I am not sure locking more people up for longer is the answer either. What works there is to place yourself on the good side of society and isolate yourself from the scum (gated and wealthy communities) - I be honest that probably works for me..

A great result that the vehicle was recovered, but still a royal nuisance it went in the first place. It’s a credit to AirTags, I must say.

TexasRover, I can tell you the justice system here has little impact on those committing all but the most serious of offences . . . Charlie
