TDI 200 power steering noise when turning wheels
Dear all

Any idea about the sounds (please refer youtube link and forum link as below)?

https://forums.lr4x4.com/topic/107950-help-again-power-steering/

Recently I adjusted back the alternator base plate position as the triangle plate (2 bolts) were broken and replaced power steering belt as went missing. So after all the job been done and complete, I went to test drive, there was a sound (kindly refer above video) when I turn the steering.

Appreciated your guys helps! Very Happy [/url]

I think the first thing I'd do is check the level of the power steering fluid. Darren

Hi Darren

I just check the fluid, the level is ok.

But looks like the sound come from the pump itself.

Anyway, thank you.

Try bleeding the system.

If there is air in the fluid level will appear high but pressure will be low.

No I’m not that technical

All you need to do is fill the reservoir, start the engine and check that the fluid doesn’t drop, if it does fill as it falls.

Once it’s level and not dropping open the bleed nipple on the steering box whilst the engine is running.

Keep opening and closing until no bubbles come out.

Refill the reservoir to the mark.

Should be ok.

If it is still making that noise then check if the pump is loose.

The bracket holding it on the engine can crack as it holds the alternator as well.

If it’s not that then check the box.

Good luck

The 200tdi pump does not like having the belt too tight as it can prematurely wear the bearings. They are not massively robust pumps.

As for the noise it sounds like air in the system, as others have said, even after topping up the system and waiting for the bubbles to circulate you can still have air in the system.

To check there is a bleed nipple on top of the steering box itself. Crack it open with the engine at idle and see if any air comes out. Add more ATF to the reservoir as the level goes down.

DO NOT turn the steering wheel at the same time as the PAS fluid will empty very quickly.

Tighten the nipple up, leave the engine idling and turn the wheel slowly from lock to lock a few times. Check the nipple for air.

Hopefully that will sort out your noise.

You may have to re-check the levels regularly for a bit.

Failing that you could try a PAS system flush. The system takes about 3 litres of ATF.
