Witter Receiver Hitch (not for Defenders)
I just thought I’d post this for interest. Witter are marketing a receiver hitch for a range of vans/campers. Is this the first time a type-approved one has been offered in the UK? I’m assuming as Witter say it can be used for towing that it is type-approved.

It appears very expensive for a vw transporter when going through the website!
Standard bar is about 25% of the price.

Yes, I’ve no intention of buying one, I’m just interested that there is one on the market. I don’t think it hasbeen 100% certain whether it was possible to sell one that was approved.

I’ll likely get a Safari Equip one at some point 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Looking at the details for one for my vw, it does seem to be type approved. It also is possible to buy a fancy swinging arm thing for bike rack or luggage box arrangement. I would imagine that is as dear as the tow bar though.

I know they've been around years, but I've never seen a UK type approved one before. It would be nice to have one available for Defender. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

The L332 Range Rovers had them from the factory.

There are no type approved receiver hitches for the proper Defender, but fortunately there are excellent non-TA options for those of us lucky enough not to need to worry about type approval.

Vehicles over a certain age. It used to not apply to commercials as well, but I think that has gone now. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Yes, for some years after M1 vehicles required TA towing attachments N1 vehicles did not, so, for example, my '07 double cab does not, but an SW of the same year does. Now all do, but it I not retrospective.

Cheers

Out of interest, slightly OT but do you now how the law aplies to Imported US or Jap spec vehicles as have been told numerous times its illegal to tow anything as they don't conform to UK regs for weights, etc ??

Thats not the case, as far as I know it must only use a type approved tow bar on a non commercial after 1998 and after 2008 for all from memory.

All you need to do is get details form the manufacturer and the DVLA will update it. e.g. if you import a Japanese Discovery 2, you can get a certificate of conformity from Land Rover.
