It was actually the guy posted the Juice video I aimed my reply at as I'm curious as to whether Shielder has made improvements to the quality of it's bulkhead, nevertheless it's heartening to know at least 1 manufacturer has got it spot on, congrats on your own build and best of luck to ur mate on his.

wonder if the magic of video will show its 100% and every nut and bolt comes undone with no problem

“It depends”….

Do you just do the bulkhead; or does ‘mission creep’ kick in and you decide to do more stuff while things are accessible? Do you have easy and quick access to some parts you find you need as you go? Is the car close by in your own garage, or somewhere else? Are you working full time or just weekends and evenings? Do you find you need new tools?

When I did mine - the first one I was involved in - I think it was about 5 or 6 weeks. But that allows time for changes of plan such as the bulkhead being galved and painted instead of just painted. I also decided to fit new galvanised tub cappings while the roof was off.

These days online parts diagrams allow you to plan much better and buy in almost everything in advance. Back then, which must be pushing 15 or 16 years ago, I had to rely on the two old guys in the local parts dept and their microfiche machine - but at least I had that - no local parts department and two experienced guys behind the counter these days. Local LR franchise guys have no ‘retail’ parts dept and would have to send away for stuff anyway.

I think I could certainly do the job a lot quicker now - maybe a couple of weeks if I had everything to hand, and things went well. Maybe quicker, but they’d need to be long days.

On the other hand - and to give a completely different perspective, the latest one has taken two years and counting!

That includes changing from Sheilder to Ultra bulkheads; time delays for galving and painting (twice!); the tail end of COVID restrictions; my being ill for a good 5 months last spring; my mate (who’s car it is) indulging in a lot of ‘mission creep’; and the car being in his shed 20 miles away.

Not exactly sure how useful that reply is…. but it depends!

One thing I would say is that you really benefit from having lots of space to lay stuff out, ideally in a logical order, so that you can find things easily and lay out new parts alongside old, etc etc. My mate’s shed has space for 5 or 6 large tables and when you start on the reassembly it really helps to be able to see and find stuff quickly. Donald

Did you see the part were he asks the young lad how the bulkhead fitting is going? The lad rolls his eyes looks at the floor and mutters about how he,s had to drill lots of holes!

an interesting video that shows folk how much work it is to swap one in a decent workshop.

12 mins and 15 mins part 3...is the main feedback on it

so holes missing

bulkhead is single skin and twisted and didnt fit......he says.

when we did ours we fitted it to the chassis not the body.

well we're working our way thru the 90 as we speak.

maybe start a new thread as you rebuild yours .

i have to say i like that fact that richards will let you have an up close and personal look at what they make, and they welcome feedback. unlike the last one we bought. they new things were missing and couldn't care less .

both doors went on without an issue.

all the major components fitted spot on.

1 wing on today and it lines up lovely

apologies for the wonky seam sealer lines.

nice not to have to drill holes for grommets and the fact the holes are correct size saves time.

extra wax before the wing goes back on.

will happily buy another but poss an e coated one

a few pics of the work pre galv or e coat they do. the brackets and stampings are a work of art.
Why would you use a E coat rather than galv?

e coat offers a better finish for paint.

no need to t wash it.

cold dip process so less chance of warping.

if you think a std lr bulkhead has lasted xxx years with a whisper of paint nad no anti corrosion covering then these should last even longer

a progress update on mine the bulkhead is now bolted to the chassis. slight problem i had to run a drill through the bolt holes on the bulkhead where it bolts to the outrigger on the chassis but it was a perfect fit apart from this. bulkhead and chassis are both from richards chassis.

Worth checking out their latest video about the Disco refurb, at approx 13:30mins you will get further info on their experience of fitting the bulkhead. 1992 Defender 90 SW 200Tdi
