Draining coolant on a 2015 puma 2.2 no easy way?
Is there really no easier way to do this??

I just spent a morning extracting and then draining the coolant - post 2012 with no easy access hose on the now deleted fuel cooler. Workshop manual doesn’t cover the later engine.
Heater on and set to hot. Bleed screw open.
I pulled about 4 litres out of the top of the radiator. Then drained from the bottom right radiator hose which is reasonably accessible.
But with those two I only have 6.5 litres.
The two hoses on top of the oil filter housing are a PITA or impossible to get at or manœuvre. and I don’t fancy another 4 litres of coolant all over the place.
Why didn’t they just plumb in a drain hose somewhere?
Or am I missing something?
Anyhow, topped back up with 6.5 litres of new stuff (right spec) which should be good for a while I hope and will mix with the 3.5 litres of the old stuff.
Anyone got any better way to do this?

Can this not be done by draining at the heat exchange unit on the inner chassis rail? 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

LR deleted this somewhere post 2012.

So no water pipes down there.
Just a few mounting bolts.

Your right, no fuel cooler on 2.2 so no coolant pipes to drain from on near side chassis rail. So I had to drain by removing pipe from oil cooler thermostat spigot. Due to location it means you can’t get all the coolant into a single bucket , so need lots of strategically placed containers to catch as much as possible. When drained I hosed all the chassis, in the chassis, and all under the truck to wash away residue.

As you did you also need to drain the rad separately to get the max of the coolant out.

The clamp on the oil cooler pipe is the spring type, so I used a small set of mole grips to open up and clamp open, then twist and wiggle the pipe off the spigot. It’s not difficult to do while under the vehicle, Just fiddly. Plus wear goggles and something waterproof as you will get wet and you don’t want coolant in your eyes.

It’s not a design that helps a DIYer, if on ramps it would be a lot easier, but given you only need to do once every 10 years it’s worth getting as much of the original coolant out when you do.

They may well have kept it for vehicles heading for hotter climates....or as ever they had some in the parts bin when yours was on the production line so fitted it. You never know with LR Very Happy

The presence or not of a fuel cooler isn't specifically linked to the engine being a 2.2. The change happened during the 2013MY. Darren

Any idea why they stopped fitting it in 2013 LRA ? I assumed it was something to do with the different fuel setup due to the 2.2 having a pump in the tank.

No, sorry. It's just something that I noticed from the VIN number that marked the change. It could be the result of some sort of cost saving review where it was found to be unnecessary, but that's just a guess. Darren

2011 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 SW Stornoway Grey
On a slightly related topic, how to drain the 2.4 via the fuel cooler? Which hoses to yank? The last time I tried to yank of the hoses, pressing down on the release buttons of course, they wouldn't come off! Shocked

I've recently seen what looks like rust dust and bits in my coolant so it's time to drain, flush, and refill with proper coolant

Advice and tips welcome
