2013 Defender 110 Puma 2.2 SW Indus Silver

Engine oil light - 2.2 2013 puma

Had a drive out to a local beach this afternoon, fair bit of sand driving and a water crossing on the way back. Then the engine oil light came on. Stopped the car and checked the oil level on the dipstick which showed all was ok. Then restarted the car and no light appeared, so carried on our way home, again no light for the rest of the journey. What could be the possible causes for the light to come on if the oil level was ok? Failing oil pump, dodgy sensor?
Any advice would be helpful.

How soon after the water crossing was the illumination of the light?

It may have been a temporary short on the oil pressure switch wiring or connector due to water ingress. Oil pressure switches are either normally closed or normally open. I think the puma ones are normally closed ( I would need to check the wiring diagrams to confirm). If normally closed an earth is extended to the engine ECU when their is no or very low oil pressure. When you start the engine oil pressure is generated and a diaphragm in the switch moves and opens the switch contacts, removing the earth. Not seeing the earth means the ECU believes oil pressure is there and extinguishes the oil light on dash.

Therefore if the oil switch wiring is shorted by water ingress an earth is present and the light comes on. This may have happened to you and as the water dissipated the short to earth is removed and the engine light extinguished.

So have a look at your oil pressure switch connector to see if it is damp inside and at the wiring to see if it is chafed and close to touching metal components of the vehicle.

It was soon after the water crossing so I’ll start there and have a look at the switch first.

Was it sea water? Sea water is very conductive (and hence so corrosive), which could make an electrical path to ground.

Having said that, the 2.2 oil pump is not the most reliable. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

No definitely not sea water, I keep it well away from driving through that.
