Wales 2008 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 USW Zermatt Silver
Crossmember Bolts.
Morning all.

I’d like to change my rear crossmember bolts to newer/fresher ones. I’m happy with using standard ones.

I’m just wondering if it’s just a case of unscrewing them, or are there nuts behind that I have undo also?

Assuming it is for a 2008, then it is simply unscrewing them. Nut is welded to the retaining bar. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

When I did mine, I used stainless and added a nylon washer and a dab of Duralac to separate the different metals:

Similar to what LRA has done, though I used cheap chinese screws (what is not made in China anyhow). Whistle

They look a bit more stock, less the rust.

How good is the quality of these screws? Do they attract a magnet? There is some rubbish ss screws doing the rounds and if thy attract a magnet you know they are full of rubbish steel.

Care not to put all stainless steels in one basket. There are lot of grade of stainless steels, and 400 series stainless steels are actually magnetic (although not generally used for fasteners).
I expect the bolts that I linked to, to be grade A2, and strength wise I have no doubt that they are fit for purpose.

Just to note that the rear tub rail uses 10 bolts tub to rail, while half as much bolts (if memory serves me well) for rail to crossmember. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

a2 /304 ss (most commonly used in motor trade)as i understand it should not be strongly magnetic (under some circumstances 304 might be a little if annealed in processing )
a4/316 used in marine industry should not be magnetic.
.........so if i was buying any of those on flea bay i personally would not be happy to use if they were magnetic.

For critical applications, you would still not want to use stainless steel bolts, whereever and by whoever they are made.

For the rest, I would not mind as long as there is no bigger risk of introducing galvanic corrosion (the risk is always there whatever you use).

In most, if not all of the body fasteners on a Defender, the fastener is much stronger than the metal around the fastener. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

I just replace using OEM bolts from JLR. Quite cheap and then keep a bit of Acf50 on them. My 90 is 8 years old and have replaced only recently due to very slight corrosion. I like the look of clean bolts. OCD Very Happy 2015 90 XS Santorini Black
