puma mt82 gearbox stuck in first.. & Removing detents
Good evening,

I’ wonder if anyone can help… I’ve a 2009/10 puma hardtop with a mt82 gearbox. Stuck currently in first after a week on the driveway in gear.

I found a topic/thread showing how to sort potentially. Here: https://www.defender2.net/forum/post696217.html

I have followed instructions all the way to the detent section… and now I’m struggling getting these out. They aren’t what I was expecting…

Any idea how to remove?!
How to get this vehicle to select a gear other than 1st.?!

Help!

The later style of detent isn't designed to be removed, and the only way to get them out is to drill a small hole in the top, screw a self-tapper in, then use a Molegrip or slide hammer to pull them out.

Ideally you should replace the detent but if you have to reuse them/it, put a couple of drops of oil down the hole you drilled then seal the hole with a blob of sealant on the outside only, don't push the sealant into the hole.

Hoorah!
Thanks all for your help, the links to the other thread certainly helped. I’d found one but was with the older mushroom headed detents.

I did exactly that and screwed a self tapper in, sliding the rail worked and put it all back together before 0900 this morning! Actually oiled then left the screw in place if it happens again. It’s not blocking anything….

Thank you so much!

After some advice please. I’ve had the problem with the MT82 gearbox, stuck in first gear. I’ve removed the detent plug and put the gearbox back in neutral. Would you recommend putting the old plug back in, trying the gearbox by driving it, then strip it back down, remove the old plug and then fit the uprated one, or just fit the new uprated one straight away? Thanks
