Puma Box on a TD5?
Re-reading the December 22 issue cover story of LRO, I wondered how sensible fitting a Puma 6 speed box to a TD5 is? I have a 2012 Puma but live in a CAZ zone and the pre-2005 TD5 does not have the CAZ charge of £9 day that I have with the Puma!!

In terms of effort (logging on to the CAZ site plus the £9) it may be a way forward to swap to a TD5 and do the 6 speed to get more comfortable cruising at speed? But is it so much effort and cost that it's not worth bothering?

I have a feeling that it would be significantly more easy to either have an LT230 re-geared to 1:1.22 or 1:1.33 or the R380 to include a V8 5th gear.

The other alternative is to keep the 1:1.44 and R380 and fit a Roamerdrie overdrive, which is what I did.

Thanks. I've seen a recent reference to Roamerdrive so will look that up. I like the tone of the TD5 compared to the Puma engine. Plus the 110 in central Bath is too big so I will look towards a TD5 90 and consider these options. Very Happy Very Happy

Top gear is virtually the same, so its not really worth the bother IMHO.

Best bet is disco ratio in the transfer box or a roamerdrive

Are you sure about the charge? I have a pre 05 td5 and the charge is higher for that.

Put the 1.222 Disco transfer box on it. Quicker and cheaper and a proven solution. Mine has been great for long distance cruising.

You'd benefit from at least a stage 1 tune to help with the 15% taller gearing TD5 hardtop to Puma inspired Poptop - my build thread

It depends on what you do with your vehicle and how modified it is, a 1.2 disco transfer box would be the cheapest but if you run larger tyres and/or tow a lot then increasing the transfer box ratio is not really a sensible option.

A 6 speed does have a very similar top gear ratio to an r380 but it also has a much lower 1st gear,

especially when you mention £9 a day for the CAZ, you’ll be getting a few hundred days of that before you recover the cost of the gearbox swap, you do also have to consider the improved fuel economy when cruising but that is hard to estimate

But for the cost I would be going down a V8 5th gear and maybe a 1.3 transfer box, but don’t know anyone with personal experience of a 1.3 box.

The transfer box solution I heard from a guy at the LR Show in Stoneleigh last year too. Thanks all for the advice. It can get confusing with so many different routes for a solution. Very Happy

CAZ charge in Bath does not apply to private cars pre-2005 or so. I've checked the CAZ website using some older number plates off Defenders and it doesn't apply a charge. Not the same for Bristol which is stricter. It makes sense to discourage diesel use here as we live in a bowl which retains the Nitrous Oxide fumes. However, I don't use the Puma truck as a daily (either walk or cycle) so I can live with the cost but it's a nuisance to do it. There is no automatic system unlike say a TAG or similar - so if I forget (which I have) then its £60 + the charge. If it was registered as a car and I paid the £600+ RFL then I could use it without paying the charge here! Ironic when I see Disco 2s running around with no charge chucking out more fumes than me in a 2012 Puma! But nothing I can do other than change vehicle.

Lucky Censored , the ones in Scotland are worse for older vehicles irrespective of ownership...

Just make sure any TD5 you buy esp if its a 90 isn't a converted Van as my 110 is a N1 as its a Double Cab and thus sadly counts as a van.

Thanks. Yes I will ensure that its a 'car'. My Puma is the usual commercial rating and thus the CAZ trips me up! Mind you, I knew that when I bought it last year - but, as always with these things - it was the right vehicle and I love it. Rolling with laughter

I have just put my reg number into the UK Gov website and it says there is no charge in Bath for my 2002 Td5 Defender - don't go straying into Bristol though (as if you would! lol). However, be careful. My Defender is a station wagon, if it were a commercial I suspect it would be a different story as vans and light commercials pay £9 regardless of emission category.

I also have the Ashcroft 1.3 ratio transfer box and V8 5th gear ratio on the R380 and can say it was a thoroughly worthwhile upgrade. Now 70 mph is achieved at around 2400rpm rather than nearly 3000rpm with the old 1.4 box (265/75R16 tyres). First gear is still OK for towing and you get used to the slightly larger rpm step from 4th to 5th gear.
