I think where you live must make a big difference - post codes etc.

NFU insure my chipped 90 for £600 inc my 18 year old son as a named driver, fully comp, protected no claims, off road etc etc. (it was only £450ish last year!!).

Obviously pays to shop around.

Just called the NFU people.... Censored !
They won't even try to quote for my Defender in Surrey as it's near to London... Despite 12 years NCB and a Tracker being fitted.. Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

Land Rover insurance wanted £427 before I told them I had spots and an A bar... Premium jumped to £560..

DirectLine £473 online, and after calling and chatting to one of their chappies, it was confirmed at £473 including my minor mods.. Very Happy ... ,-------,

Over the years some people have been known to mount them on the top of the bumper. Steve.
Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades.
Current Defender: A non tarts hand-bagged Puma 110 XS USW.

I got , we are no where near that price , most of our companies will not quote on a new vehicle

Adrian Flux declined to even quote for my unmodified 110, which they also did the pervious year with my D3. "Sorry sir we will not be anywhere near as competitive as anybody else since Sun Alliance withdrew the underwriting".

I then tried to get quotes elsewhere which I did very sucessfully until I asked what the difference would be if I had a winch fitted. The typical answer was we wont insure you. "Why would you need a winch!"

The Puma aircon grill sticks out too much for bumper mounted spots...
But DirectLine were the cheapest with the best cover... £473.82... Seems I got thru to someone that actually knows Defenders are actually used off tarmac! ... ,-------,

Just bought a 2008 Puma 90 XS.

It has a winch on it - not something I was desperate to have but if it's there...... Very Happy

Direct Line said they could only insure me if I removed it!

NFU quoted £567

Adrian flux quoted £375 then reduced to £351 as I'm a Wessex 4x4 Response member and then down to £321 when I said I didn't want all the accidental injury & lost key cover - useless stiff which never pays out anyway. Covered for green laning & not fussed about the winch

Result I thought Thumbs Up

EDIT - must change my signature........ Very Happy

AF will never again see a penny of my money. Rang them to flip the defender insurance (400 quid a year) to my landcruiser - restricyed mileage to 5000 per annum, not modified. "yes no problem, your new premium is £1800". WHAT?! They weren't for moving so I said ok, cancel the policy (I'm 3 months in) they said sure, you can have 80 quid back. Eighty quid?! Policy has only been running for three months. "ah its the fees". WHAT?! I said look, I pay for the policy at the time of purchase, I don't split it monthly, if I did do that and cancelled what then? They said oh yes, if you were paying monthly you could just stop the DD. So basically I've been penalised for having the money to pay for the policy in one go. Absolute tossers. I've written to the insurance ombudsman about it.

Quote from a different specialist insurer? £360. AF can go to hell.

Are Byways/greenlanes off road? I thought they were classed as a highway, hence you need tax/MOT/insurance etc to legally be on them. My point is, they (the insurers) don't really need to know whether you use your vehicle on them any more than the tarmac.

Or are you looking for 'proper' off road use insurance? Mark

Exactly right. Green lanes are highways so it's s con when an insurer says "we cover green lanes" when they all do.

The old insurance adage of "We're here for your protection" has totally gone out of the window these days. A couple of years ago I had bought a 7.5t horsebox insured it, fine was a bit more than I was paying for any of my Landy's. It rarely got used so when the plate ran out it just stayed parked up where it was and after a month or so I decided to get shot of it. As with any motor they sell better with test on them so off to test we went. First of all it had to be insured so I could drive it to the test centre etc. The premium had gone up(as per usual) and a new policy of the insurance company was that they wouldn't do DD and I had to pay up 12mths straight away. Never mind I thought, when the lorry is sold I cancel and get a refund. How wrong was I. No refunds even though I argued the point that the buyer had to put insurance on the vehicle that I allready had a policy on. What a rip off Evil or Very Mad And there's me thinking that there is something illegal about having more than one policy on a vehicle, something to do with fraud, but it must be OK for he insurance companies as they write the rules
