You could but considering how buried the unit is I think that would be really pointless. You wouldn’t be able to calibrate the mpg- set any functions etc. The wire for the switches can just be tiny signal wire it carries no real voltage or current. I used a multi core from eBay.

I used a donor cluster too it makes life easier.

You probably could?
once you’ve set it to the page you want, that will always come on when you turn on the ignition,

It’s quite straightforward installing the buttons, you just need good eye sight Laughing
Also, you would be missing out on so many other pages of information, which I think would be a shame?

If you’ve gone to all that trouble, why not go all the way with it? Rolling Eyes

Not sure of the wire gauge, but it’s very small!!

I’m not suggesting this is the correct wire, but this is what I used for mine… http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/4-6-8-Core-White...3cfd834d4f My 90 Project : http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic52774.html

easy to install if you have the time and skills! Mines been in there nearly two years now without a problem!

I used a 9 core computer cable to attach the buttons with a plug in the steering cowl if i ever need to get to the ignition barrel or whatever!

Did anyone played with moving the DPF leds into new place? As I understood, there are two leds with DPF icons for 2.2 engines, which need to go out during Ultragauge installation. Looks like plenty of space to put them somewhere around, drilling some extra holes etc. However, those two leds are mounted on bigger element, which probably cannot be easy cut down. Any ideas? any attemps to make it working?

I just simply cut the symbols out as a big square, de-soldered the leds (two of them) from the binnacle board and soldered in 2 pairs of wires.

Then soldered the LEDs to a bit of copper track board and soldered the respective cables to the required sides of the LEDs.

No idea if they work, but they’ve never lit up, never had the engine management light on and I am guessing that there would be some sort of fault code flash up on the ultragauge if there were to be a problem. 2011 Defender DCPU 2.2 - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic30623.html

Thanks, I was thinking the same directlion. Just the matter to find some good new place for them. I was asking because it was never really mentioned, except the fact there are some leds. Last mod I could see here could be to convert original LCD into reverse background colour, like UG has.

mine are in the little space in the rev counter, opposite to where the LCD is, I have no idea how to change the polarity of the LCD. I also need to change the colour as the rest of my lights are blue now! 2011 Defender DCPU 2.2 - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic30623.html

Typically polarity can be changed by removing the polarization screen layer, then assembling it in reverse position. The best to try on spare LCD from other dashboards, it could be very sensitive for scratches etc.
I managed to find the instrument cluster from freelander, which looks moreless identical, including its LCD. I'll try to play around and check how difficult is to reverse the colours on them. The best cound be if all tree could match its background colours.

I’ve just done my conversion and it went okish!!! End result looks great but the OBD wiring to the Ultragauge is fragile so I had to resolder a couple times!!
Anyways my question for anyone who has done it, do your fuel and temp needles do a little stutter after turning ignition off?
Mine drop to the rest position when you turn ignition off and when they stop they then do a tiny spike simultaneously and go back to rest position?
They work as normal when in operation but wanted to see if anyone has anything similar?
Thanks

Yesjus, my fuel gauge does that too post installation although it is not really noticeable. It was also the needle that was hardest to remove and came out on its spindle unlike the others which came off without their spindles.

I’m not sure why it does it - possibly not in quite the right stop position or too much friction somewhere? Let me know if you find a fix.
