German Puma - a little embarrassing
The new German Tank "Puma" recently went on its first excersise. Within a few days 18 of 18 vehicles have failed Rolling Eyes Mainly cause by "electronics" defects, including one major wiring loom fire.
The manufacturer sent a repair team and has now concluded almost all defects were merely "bagatelles" (except for the fire).

As a German engineer with a background in (non-military) embedded software systems and electronics this embarrasses me more than a bit and raises a couple of questions.

- How is it possible to have "bagatelle" defects in a multi-million military system (after they were deemed fit-for-fight)?
- How can seemingly small defects lead to major system failure? What about redundancy?

It would appear that the new British tank, Challenger 3 is also having problems, again I think with electronic gremlins. Defender 90XS SW

Clever people trying to out smart the not so clever that own the cheque book.

One thing I like about the US army is that they ditch the emission systems and in the case of trucks more often the speed limiters as well.

Having something fit for purpose trumps the banner welding greenies who would be the first to leg it if the poop hit the fan…..

Oh. You mean tanks do have emission systems? And speed limiters?? Shocked
Are they also limited to not fire between 10pm and 6am because of noise?

The big push in the first Gulf war was delayed due to the "new" Challenger Tanks having issues.

Three different companies did the computers for the transmission, gun and engine but the systems didn't talk to each other.

Ask any REME bod who had to work 20hr days to sort it out.

When the Government buys anything it is a cock up.

Just look at the British Ajax debacle ( would probably renamed CIF if it was good enough to be sold in the EU Whistle ).

Anyway, The Pentagon Wars was a classic, all about the Bradley Fighting Vehicle and the mentality of the classic too many cooks scenario.
