Replacement exhaust advice
One of the jobs I've had on the list of upgrades is a replacement exhaust as part of a planned stage 2. Having developed a hole in the exhaust I’m going to do this sooner than planned.

I’ve been looking at a full system from demand which comes in north of £800

So two questions

1. Are there other (cheaper) options I should look at?
2. 2.5 or 3 inch front to back? The TD5 isn’t exactly quiet so I’m not so worried about noise but want to avoid droning.

Thanks

I had a full stainless system custom made for my Mercedes OM606 engined 110. It cost £800 fully fitted in 2021. I used Long Life Exhaust in Caerphilly, who I've used a few times now. I think they're nationwide, but operate on a franchise basis. I told them I wanted a nice burble, which was achieved using one central silencer. I'm extremely pleased with it and get lots of ' that sounds nice, what engine's in it?' comments. Td5's can sound fantastic when done right, but more often than not are just too loud. Less is more sometimes.

I used longlife in London for a non defender 4x4 SS exhaust . They did a great job and got the sound just right for me on its 3.5L V6.
The difference between the longlife and demand is the demand comes in sections that match the original LR sections, whereas LongLife welded the whole thing up.

That's interesting, when they did mine it was made with joints, so could be removed if needed. It would definitely be worth mentioning. They did a 4l Jeep one for me, the sound was spot on with that too, much nicer than the previous Borla, which was too loud.

With the 3.5l 4x4 it could come out in one length from the cat back as long as you supported on the chassis and let the rear axle hang, so guess that’s why they welded it all up.

Just pay the price and order from Demand it fits properly and has all the correct bolt togeather joints no silly sliding joints which always move in use.

My 90 has a 3” system from Demand. It was somewhere in the £900-1,000 region two years ago. It’s an investment grade item, hence I went back to Demand for a custom system on my V8. Charlie

It's a galvanized chassis, painted black, photo was taken after it was restored, before it was driven. Its covered in mud now!

Thanks all, I will look more into Long Life as I'd not heard of them, although there is a fitter not too far away from me.

Long Life and Demand seem really good options, although quite an investment I'm not adverse to this as I'm planning on keeping her for a while Smile

2.5" here with their mid silencer.

The whole system has a lovely deep/rich tone to it and particularly comes alive when you give it a bit of the right foot. Wink 1992 Defender 90 SW 200Tdi
