Defender and the cold weather

So....as we all know it has been blooming cold over the last week, so what is it like to own a Defender in this weather?

To start with I have to pretend mine is LHD, the drives door actuator froze (mine is an XS with central locking) and hence I have had to climb in from the passenger side. This also means that when in the doors immediately lock themselves so I don't have the luxury of starting the engine and then going back inside until it warms up. This, however, wouldn't help much anyway as mine doesn't warm up that well on idle and so needs to be driven.

The heated screen is great, well the parts that still work are and by the time I have driven the 3 miles to work the heater is getting warm enough to get some feeling back in my fingers. Heated seats I love and Land Rover seem to have made seats that heat up far quicker than some German manufacturers.

Basically, what I am eluding to is that whilst a Defender is a very capable vehicle to use in the snow it is not the easiest vehicle to live with.

Would I rather be in something else....absolutely not!!!!

A removable steering wheel has the benefit of not only providing extra security, but also adding the ability to start the drive with a warm wheel.

1983 Defender 110 Other HT Auto Keswick Green

I've a 606 in mine, but being a cast iron block it takes ages to warm up. I'm planning on fitting a diesel air heater to it in the new year. They're not a convenient as a car for sure, but once warm are way better! Nice pair of 110's.

I rather think your are "alluding" not "eluding"!

You wouldn't believe how many of my students don't know the difference between the two.

You're right, life with a defender is a throwback to the good old days of motoring when gloves, scarves, and common sense were mandatory!

Oh that made me chuckle

I have seen plenty of other folks in hats, gloves and scarves driving modern vehicles with all the trimmings. Mind you they still drive off with 1/4 ton of snow on the roof and looking through port holes of fogged up glass...
