I would imagine the roof rack, side box and side ladder would all be bad for fuel economy. Low 30's would seem reasonable with those on. There seems to be various figures online for roof racks, but -10% seems fairly common...

As Nick said the exterior accessories definitely have negative impact on fuel consumption, I normally get around 29-33MPG on ours but I drive it like I've stolen it most days, however when going with the flow on the motorways around Glasgow & Edinburgh I have average up to 38MPG 2014 110 2.2TDCi XS Station wagon

Add ons are not going to help the drag factor, neither will the 22in wheels.
But I think the Defender by its size will struggle, and anything over 40mpg would be considered excellent so you're not too far out. |

The Defender is a big old brute, so low 30s to me is acceptable.
I took my D200 90 to Lewis from memory I got about 650 miles from a tank. My 23MY XS 110 I got 660 miles from a tank. 24MY 90 D250 HSE, Tasman Blue |

Mine will do 32mpg in normal day to day driving round the Scottish highlands. Keeping the speed down will see mid 30’s. Stuck behind a lorry for 30 miles will see high 30’s plus. Over the 41k I’ve done it’s averaged 33.56mpg. It’s a 110 with a 3.0 litre Ingenium D200.
This is with BFG ATs, I lost about 2 or 3 mpg from the factory fit tyres when I put those on. Worth it though. |

Unfortunately you just can't compare it to your X3... I had the 218d GT which had a detuned motor that your X3 had. I was averaging 48mpg (my foot was heavy with the beemer)
Here's my consumption after ~13k km or 8k miles of driving, using data from the incontrol app export, bucketed by trip distance. Overall I've been averaging 33mpg. For long runs I've been averaging 36mpg. Steady state 70mph I've been getting 39mpg. I have the D300 with no external appendages except in winter when I have a roof box/ski rack. Thanks for the replies. I love the car and can live with the MPG but not being inclined to throw money away I would like to obtain better mpg.
If someone had a "Specific Fuel Curve" for the 3litre 250d engine then that may help me to understand where the change up and cruise sweet spot was. However I have not seen an SFC anywhere online. |

You can do your own graphs over time if you download the Fuelly.com app to a smartphone or tablet. My records are for a D240 - don’t know if you can access them but here’s a link incase it works. Good luck with finding a specific fuel curve chart. I used to make good use of them in my job road testing trucks, but they seem to have totally vanished from all manufacturers! |

In the dim and distant past I was firstly a Scania salesman, rising to Dealer Principal. So I used the SFC to help explain where to lug and where to change up to keep things in the sweet spot for pulling and economy. A familiar tool for me. It was also useful when up against competitors who used smaller capacity engines with higher boost. The big CC Scanias easily beat the small Volvo F7's F10's etc as the Scania had torque due to cc's and not due to booooost |
