TD5 Defender 110 eating steering drop arms.
For some reason my car this year has went through 5 steering drop arms. Its on the same tyres its aways been on (Goodrich mud terrains) same wheels, same everything actually apart from having to change the steering damper a few weeks ago (it had already ate 3 arms by that point) and even the same roads now I think about it.

The ball joint rubber goes pretty much within a few hundred miles. Anyone else ever suffer the same fate? 05 Alive tuned TD5 110 Defender

Still have the same arm and knocking on 240k miles. Is it the arm or the ball joint that keeps going?

If it is just the rubber cover, perhaps replace it with a silicone version from GigglePin. It is also a good idea to add a grease nipple to the bottom of the ball joint to keep that lubed and free of water.

Is it just the rubber boot failing?

If so, replacing the drop-arm is a very expensive fix!

It is possible just to replace the boot if the joint is OK, and it is possible to replace the ball-joint in the drop-arm if the ball-joint is worn.

A popular upgrade is to change to the Discovery 1 style drop-arm and drag link, which has track-rod-end-style ball-joints at both ends which are much easier to replace than the Defender-style drop-arm ball-joint.

Finally, Gwyn Lewis sells ball-joint "rubbers" which are not rubber and which last many times longer than the normal rubbers.

Thanks guys for the quick response. Yes its just the ball joint that goes, rubber splits, grease escapes, steering gets a little wobblier time to change again. I've become a dab hand at changing it and even keep a spare handy for the next time.

I'll look into Disco change and Gwyn Lewis and Gigglepin because its becoming a pain.
