Defender 110 power issues and temp overheating
Hi,
New to the forum and defenders so thanks in advance for the help.
I purchased my defender 110 a couple months back and all has been great.
Recently had a full service (first one I wanted done properly!) and the mechanic said it’s in good shape.

However last weekend I had problem!
On my journey I experienced loss of power when going through the gears and eventually i couldn’t get the throttle to rev but would continue to idle.
I pulled over and turned off engine and turned it back on, the problem went away but then quickly returned. I had the AA out who said it could be the MAP so unplugged that and he followed me home.
Engine light come on as expected and drove for 20 mins not a problem. Just before I got home it happened again. This time the temp spiked to max! I quickly pulled up and turned engine off. I turned it back on straight away and the temp was back to normal! I then continued home (5mins) and had no problems, until I went to reverse on my drive…the temp spiked again so shut engine off, however this time when i went to turn it back on, it would start up but then die on me….later that eve I went to move it off the pavement! And it started fine, would rev and easily got it back on the drive!!

Upon some reading up it sounded like the MAP sensor or the VCV valve. So I’ve just changed them both.
Just gone out for a drive and the same thing is happening ( I’m currently stuck In a lay-by waiting for it to cool down!!)
Same thing happened, it was fine for 10 mins…pulled over to check engine bay, started it up again thinking all was fixed and just as I was approaching a junction I could feel the defender not responding to the throttle. Put it in 1st and it barely got over 500rpm and temp spiked again to max.
After turning off and on temp returns to normal however same problem with once it starts up it just chugs a bit then dies.
Sorry to waffle on but wanted to give you as much info as poss….any help welcome!!

To also add, to help with the over heating I turned the heater on and I dont know how well they work but the lower heater was burning my leg!! Maybe a radiator issue??

Are the spikes in temperature immediate or take a few minutes?


If immediate then this would suggest the issue is electrical (sensor, ecu, or the wiring in-between) rather than a physical issue with the cooling system.

The coolant level remains normal. However I have a OBD scanner and it’s showing no faults!
Also after inspecting the underneath i am noticing a lot of brown water/oily residue under the engine but no obvious leaks/drips. Is this normal?

I would say gradually rising at a fast pace (20 seconds or so) instead of immediate spike so don’t know if this would point to an electrical problem

Just to add, don’t know if relevant but I finally got home and it died again on me as just pulling up.
I’ve let cool and went to move onto drive.
On start up it bellowed white smoke form the exhaust…I applied some throttle and the white smoke turned to a small bit of black smoke before clearing.
If I rev hard it will still produce black smoke.

Really need some help here guys with suggestions.
It’s been in the garage now for nearly 2 weeks. Mechanic can’t find anything!!? He’s also done some road tests and it hasn’t done the problem with him?? He’s done electrical checks, head gasket checks etc and no results that indicate problems.

It’s being dropped back tonight…any thoughts on what it could of been and maybe self corrected or anything my guy might of missed?

If you drive it up to temp, do your coolant hoses remain rock hard after after the engine has cooled down?

Have you noticed if this happens or starts to happen only when you're going up hill in a high gear?

Thanks for the links.
I have scrolled through many a thread and there is lots of potential things it could be! It doesn’t help that my mechanic (a Land Rover specialist) can’t find anything at all??

I guess my question is does any one have any idea or can take a guess at what it may of been that has corrected its self??

That way I might be able to drive it and convince myself it’s all okt 😫

When this happened to mine, it turned out to be the head gasket. I also changed a lot of parts too! The reason I didn’t think it was the head gasket at first was because when I did a the reld test for gasses in the coolant, it came back negative.

The mechanic has checked the block etc and done tests but your saying it could still be head gasket then?
If it was head gasket could it appear to be self corrected? ( it done it 3 drives in a row?)
My guy has had it and it hasn’t done it at all??

Don’t know if relevant but Just before doing this it sat for 2 weeks, it was when we had that really heavy rain?

Maybe water got in somewhere and has since dried out?? Maybe dirty diesel sat in tank 🤞🏻🤞🏻

I only mentioned the head gasket as my car was up and down for a while. It became predictable when it was going to go into limp mode but it took a while before that happened. It was always going up hill in 6th gear that would trigger it. If i didnt change down before it got into the red then it would become unresponsive to throttle for about 10 - 15 seconds.

It might not be the same for you but if you know the signs then you can look out for it. When it started it happened out of the blue and it was only once in a while.

I had another temp gauge issue on start up but I fixed that by cleaning the Cylinder Head Temp (CHT) contacts with contact cleaner. Cheap fix but a pain to diagnose.

If you have a scanner that can give you a live temp reading then that might be useful to see. Under normal conditions mine doesnt go over 94c with it usually being in the 89c-92c range.
