Poor running 1995 110 3.5 V8 after hot start - sometimes...?
Good afternoon mates -

Trying to diagnose a poor running condition on a 1995 3.5 V8 dual carbs. Issue comes and goes so it hard to diagnose. Generally shows itself after a hot restart. Smells like it is running rich or the choke is stuck. Pulled plugs after and they are dry so not sure exactly if it is a running rich issue or other. Seems to give black smoke and smells like fuel out the back though when it happens. Let it sit for 15-20 minutes all good, sometimes never comes back after driving but has been acting up lately. When it happens when I am driving it seems like it has gone into limp mode, no power, won't idle etc.

Any thoughts? carbs are topped up, checked the ignition components and they checked out ok.

Do you have phenolic spacers fitted between the carbs and the inlet manifold? If not, fuel evaporation could be a consideration.

Carbs are sensitive to temperature and will fuel differently when the engine is at operating temperature versus at cold. It’s possible that one or both of the carbs are over-fuelling the engine when at operating temp.

I would see if you can find someone in your area that is experienced in tuning cards and have them go over everything. You might find you are in need of carb rebuilds. Charlie

Was thinking the same, heat soak related fuel locking, the fuel vapourises in the lines/conections and then there are problems with running or starting.

Had a problem with a VW Polo that did this on hot days/long journeys, failed to re-start or ran really rough for a while, moving the fuel line and adding some insulation helped. Zaid-M

Interesting - what do these spacers look like? As far as I know the truck is bone stock....

They are dark in colour like ebony and have an arrow moulded to show the correct orientation (airflow).

Ah ok thanks - yes those are there at least. I tried adding a fuel stabilizer for ethanol content, we are at 10% give or take but did not seem to effect it much after a few tanks with the additive. So when this happens it seems like it is rich, not a fuel starvation problem, rather over fueling. When I pull the plugs right after they are dry though. The black smoke seems to me to be over fueling.

I was thinking then back to ignition p bad coil maybe that gets hot? Resistance in it shows 1 which is within range.

I run an old Range Rover classic on twin carbs and the new E10 fuel did have some impact. Sometimes I would find that fuel simply evaporated from the carbs when hot after a run - requiring a degreee of cranking before it would start - even when assisted by an electric fuel pump. I also found that the vehicle would stink of petrol fumes when in the garage after a run - this was down to the extra ethanol content escaping through the rubber pipes. The solution was to fit new E10 compatible plastic fuel pipes. This stopped the fumes in the garage and helped through less fuel evaporation. ----------------------------------------------

My Range Rover doesn't have the old mechanical lift pump - only an electric facet pump. When the ignition is switched on (before starting) I can hear the fuel prime through the system and you can see the fuel flowing from the tank, through the pump to the carbs, then returning via the return pipe to the tank. Therefore, when the carbs demand fuel there is a plentiful supply. ----------------------------------------------
