2015 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 HT Montalcino Red

2015 defender Handbrake

Hi guys
I drove my 2015 defender with handbrake on(100%) for about 200m up to 90km/h and finally I noticed with the cabin was full with smoke I pulled over and found the handbrake had became fully without any resistance
I want to know what damage had happened on the car and what is the worst case and what should i do

Remove rear propshaft and handbrake drum, have a look at the handbrake shoes.
You will probably get away with adjusting them or replacing them, it depends how much heat you generated, at worse case it could have warped the brake drum(very unlikely) or cooked the rear output seal.

2007 Defender 90 Other CSW Trident Green

I once drove 150 miles while towing a caravan with the handbrake on due to the handbrake expander failing and locking the shoes on. I did notice a slight lack of power. I must also point out that part of that journey was up Shap on the M6 the highest section of motorway in the country and a constant climb.

When I arrived at the caravan site and whilst unpacking I noticed that the handbrake drum was glowing Oh **** I thought. To cut to the chase the next day I took to the Land Rover to an independent garage located nearby and the result was no damage, he advised changing the shoes though which I agreed he also fitted a new expander. Have you caused any oil leaks (due to cooked oil seal)?

If not, check shoes still have some brake material left and rough up with some emery paper. Adjust to get a good bite point and check the brake works properly. If this is all good then no need to change anything.

Thank u no there is no oil leak at all i only drove it for 200 - 300 m I reached up to 90km/h then I slowed down when I started to smell the smoke when I stopped I saw the cabin with a smoke it smells like a burning wires

Good point re oil seal, I'd be checking the levels just in case. I too managed to drive about 2 miles with the handbrake on and cooked the rear output oil seal on the transfer box.

So u only had to change the oil seal no other things?

The oil seal was the only thing required but I fitted a whole new flange kit while it was apart as the OEM kit (genuine parts in a white box) was not a lot of money. Did an oil change while I was at it. Oil leak stopped, transfer box survived many years with no leaks before becoming noisy due to a bearing, I don't link the two issues though. The truck lead a very hard life before I owned it and the transfer box did 117,000 miles.
