Defender TD5 rattle at 30mph'ish in 4th and 40mph in 5th....
Hi all,

I've got a rattle in my TD5 defender and i cant figure out where it's coming from.

This happens at a specific RPM and is easiest to force at just over 30mph in 4th and just over 40mph in 5th. I dont get the rattle if im off the gas and let the car coast at this speed.

Because it's not speed/gear specific but RPM specific what could it be? It feels/sounds like it's coming from the transfer-box area. The oil level in gearbox and transfer box are good. However for a while i've had a slight oil leak from the transferbox.

Any pointers to get rid of this would be much appreciated.

Many thanks

Check your exhaust manifold heat shield isn’t broken.

Are you me? I literally wrote that for the garage when I took mine in for service a couple of months ago Laughing

Turns out for my case, the nut mounting the gear stick to the seletor mechanism on the gearbox side is loose and just needs tightening.

Good advice for the OP.

Also a good opportunity to adjust the gear lever bias springs to take up any play. This can make a huge difference to buzzes & rattles, & improves the gear selection.

Cheers,

Lionel
