MAF Sensor P0101 Code / Limp Mode

Hey - I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions before I bite the bullet and take the car into the garage...

When my 2013 2.2 TDCi starts from cold and I go straight on the motorway, the initial acceleration sets off the check engine light and puts the car into Limp Mode.

The error code that comes up is P0101 $07e8, Mass or Volume Air Flow A Circuit Range / Performance

When I turn the car off and on again the Check Engine light stays on but it is no longer in Limp Mode - after a medium journey the check engine light turns itself off without being reset by my scanner. So it feels like this error only occurs in the scenario described - cold start and sharp acceleration.

I have bought Liqui Moly MAF Sensor Cleaner as recommended in another thread, and cleaned it properly. This doesn't appear to have changed anything.

Does anyone have any ideas before I have to take it into the garage? Thank you.

Check air filter is clean, check pipes and clamps from air filter box to turbo. Check wiring connector and harness to MAF. It could also be a faulty MAF sensor.

Are you getting any woosh sounds when you accelerate onto the motorway? If so you may have a slight split in the intercooler which exhibits the issue at high revs and boost pressure that does not happen at lower revs and boost. Likewise it could be a slight split in a hose from the turbo to intercooler or intercooler to inlet manifold. The latter being a rubber hose then a metal pipe then a rubber 90 degree bend to the inlet manifold.

The fact that the check engine light goes out after a medium journey indicates the triggered fault has been tested several times during the journey and not reoccurred.

You can check the intercooler by taking the front grill off , if you have aircon it will be sandwiched between the aircon at the front and the rad at the back. The Intercooler tends to split at the crimped edge on the left hand side as you look at it from the front of your defender.

Thank you for the detail, I’ll get stuck into that today - much appreciated. No whooshing noise that I’ve noticed but I’ll take it for a spin later and see if I can hear anything now I’m looking for it.

If the intercooler is split you can hear the whoosh when stationary, wind down the window, rev up engine and you will hear it.

Ian - thanks. No obvious whine as far as I can tell so I think I can rule out the intercooler.

I used to get this regularly and tried everything with the garage to fix it.
However doing just one simple thing is what eradicated it (so far - forever)
When you turn the ignition key, wait until the glow plug lamp (curly icon) goes out before you actually turn the key that last part to start.
I have no technical knowledge about why it works but it does for me.
Try it, it’ll cost you nothing.

I appreciate the error code points towards the MAF sensor, but I highly recommend removing the MAP (manifold absolute pressure) sensor and cleaning this too.

From previous experience with LR error codes & restricted performance, a dirty MAP has been the culprit.

Super simple to remove and clean, so worth the 5 minute investment in time.

Apologies for the late reply. I have actually fixed this - I had a look for cracks in the air intake and it turned out the air box was cracked and had been glued back together very shoddily. I did a quick repair to tide me over with some airtight tape (gorilla tape I believe) and that’s fixed the problem. Replacement air box coming from eBay soon so just need to fit it - easier said than done as it’s an incredibly tight squeeze to get it in but at least it’ll be fixed.
