As a side note, I've never understood this thing of keeping the spare wheel unused then being too afraid to keep/use it once it is old?

My system, and IMO the correct way to go about things, is to swap the tyres around at every service so the spare gets equal use and the most worn tyre is put aside as the spare. This way all the tyres reach end of life at the same time and can be replaced with a set of five good fresh tyres without ever having to have a spare that is so old you are worried about using it, or throwing away an unused tyre which is financial and environmental madness!
