Helinox are the best I've used but they're quite pricey.

+1 on Helinox, the best camp bed available... at a price...

... But I sourced the second one on Wish, 4x cheaper and 100% identical but the print on the canvas Wink

Helinox appears to be no more than a 21st century implementation of Leslie Hounsfield's masterpiece, and I have no doubt is every bit as comfortable.

13 shillings and tuppence in 1939. £259.95 in 2022. Shocked

That’s brilliant, thanks all. More food for thought than I expected - and from both ends of the spectrum and all the points in between - vintage, to lightweight, to heavy but comfy fishing stuff.

Particular thanks Blackwolf for the attic expedition! First time I’ve ever read the Sutton and Croydon Gaurdian, or even heard of it. I guess the WYDSA is self-explanatory. The BYGSA brackets? Maybe to support a bug net? Donald

Hi Donald

Just picked up on this thread - as "Ex military" with lots of "Roughing it" I'd really recommend the US Military Cot Bed.

https://forcesuniformandkit.co.uk/products...6gQAvD_BwE

I brought six of these back from Iraq and just sold my last "Spare" on FB yesterday, shame I didn't see your thread earlier.

Nevertheless ... I rate it extremely highly for strength, ease of use and most of all a "Good nights's sleep"

Happy hunting

I have cheap copy of that American one. Looks identical from this distance. Got it for next to nothing in a camping sale at Halfords It's excellent and has lasted 2 trips to Morocco and a traverse of the Pyrenees thus far. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

It is the first, and very likely the last, time I have read the Sutton and Croydon Guardian! Very Happy

I would guess that the WYDSA is wider than standard, but I wasn't sure if the BYGSA was longer than standard (for tall folk) or had higher/stronger legs (for hefty folk). I am sure that the extra brackets are for a bug screen (assuming that they are not off a TRIFOLD with the tilting mechanism) but since they are on the legs, which may not be original, and appear to be removable, it is possible that there was a bug-screen add-on kit which could be fitted to any of the beds.

This is such an arcane and specialised subject it is a wonder that a friendless lonely person hasn't written a book with the definitive history yet, or perhaps started a web forum for camp bed enthusiasts! Mind you even the term "camp bed" sounds a bit dodgy in these woke times.

I'll second Blackwolf, I've used the same camp bed for 20 years both as a Scout and then a Scout Leader and have never found any modern alternative, either ground mat (self inflating included) or modern camp beds to be a patch on the original. One of those things that was just right the first time around. The only possible issue is that they aren't very high off the deck so not the easiest thing to get out of.

Jay-Be folding beds
This was our solution:

£65 each from Argos... and you can use them as a decent guest bed at home! Cheaper than the fishermans friends!

They fold up small enough to fit two (folded) on top of the wheel arch in the rear of the 90, and fit in the CARANEX. SOOO much better than stretcher gizmos, and air beds that go flat... or self inflating things that are just too thin.
