Narrow tyres will give less drag and resistance and better mpg as a rule.

The Puma's are not that great on fuel. We have a number of 90's on the farm. The most frugal are the Tdi's....

And a 4.4 TDV8 RR averages better mpg than any of the Puma's.

Td5 had a 13.2 gallon tank. You'd have to get close to 42 mpg to do 550 miles. Official mpg was 28, though 30 wasn't hard to get.


Driving round Mull, very little stopping on most of the roads as it wasn't peak season / max speed of 40 mph average.

I usually average 250 miles to half a tank during normal driving a usual day is smaller farm roads and a motorway run at 60 mph, once a month I tow our horse trailer which is about 3 tonnes loaded for about 60 miles.

99% of the time I re-fill on 1/2 a tank so keep a note of the amount used, old habit for racing as we used to weigh the fuel in some of the race cars. But I just keep a running average of the litres used per 1/2 tank to check for any fuel leaks and running issues.

Some great responses; I'm in bits at the ranges some people are managing to get Neutral Big Cry Mantra is now 50-60 and only 70-80 for a little treat Laughing

Just got rid of my irksome VW Golf to scrapman so now have some more in the diesel fund I suppose. Or should that be repair fund Rolling with laughter

Standard td5 90 csw running michelin latitude Cross in standard size, usually 28 to 30 locally winter, summer this is more like 30 to 33mpg, slightly more on longer summer holiday trips with local trips included. 2004 Defender 90 Td5 CSW

The best I have ever managed is 375 miles to a tank (2.4 90) - 34 mpg.

This was a return trip from Bristol to Kent and I spent most of my time sat behind lorrys. 2011 CSW XS 90

It’s still depressing when my wife’s car weighs more than my TD5 110 yet also gets nearly double the mpg (Octavia 4x4)

feathering the throttle and keeping below 1800 rpm in a puma can achieve really good mpg, go over 50 mph and it drops off significantly, remember that the throttle in high range gives 100% throttle over much less than 100 of the travel. (memory says 25% but expect someone will correct me)

I have found that moving from standard 235 continentals on 16 inch boost to 256 BFG AT2 on 18 inch bowler wheels has dropped my mpg 10-15% approx will experiment with higher tyre pressures DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

Roof rack, 285/65/18 cooper zeon's

hybrid turbo, ic exhaust etc..

Canada 2008 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 PU Keswick Green
One Tank Distance
Stock 2008 Defender minus tires, running 31.5

Just drove to the 75th Jubilee in upstate New York, as per picture, I got a total of 712.3km= 442 miles.
I kept it at 120km averge speed, could have easily got 725km, but got worried.

Questions

1. Once the light comes on and needle is at empty, how much of a reserve is left ?

2. I am about to do a Stage 1 re-map anyone notice a differance in milage and or power ?

I have had an IRB remap for several years.

Ian knows I tow a caravan and promised me loads of torque.

I've noticed its loads smoother and extremely torquey, I can pull 6th gear at 50-55mph with the caravan and accelerate without changing down.

1st gear has also become redundant when not towing unless on a hill, I love it and it has not noticeably affected MPG, if anything its slightly better when driven in the 1500-2000 rpm torque range.

Like others in mine high RPMs and speed kills MPG. DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

Long steady run 32mpg
Fully loaded with roof tent 25mpg
