Alternatives to LR charging cable
I've had a couple of instances recently where the red fault light has illuminated on the charger on the 240v domestic supply cable. So far disconnecting the cable from the supply and waiting a bit before reconnecting has remedied whatever fault was detected.

However, in light of this I think it would be wise to invest in another charging cable in case this one develops a permanent fault. Rather than purchase another from LR I have seen advertised several 'all in one' cables which use interchangeable tails allowing you to carry only one cable but connect to multiple power sources ie domestic socket, wall box or commercial charging points.

Does anyone out there have one of these they can recommend?

If there are any electrical/electronics gurus out there I'd appreciate your thoughts on what may be the problem... it has just occurred again

I disconnected the type 2 plug from the car (which was fully charged) the transformer then started flashing the red fault light. I disconnect the domestic plug from the EV charging socket, waited a few moments and reconnected the domestic plug to the EV charging socket (nb its a specifically designed domestic socket for EV charging). Immediately the red fault light flashed. I disconnected the plug once again and this time connected it to a different standard domestic socket. The green power light illuminated, no flashing red fault light. I then went back and plugged it back into the EV charging socket. green power light illuminated, no flashing red. I connected the type 2 socket to the car and it began to charge normally.

That looks exactly the same one as I had on the Mini Countryman PHEV and in 2020 I had a safety recall on mine because of overheating causing them to trip out. It was the only time that car went into a dealership in the 2 years ownership of it. Mine actually never used to give me any problems and I left the thing plugged in under the car for 3-4 months at a stretch when I was at sea………. But BMW still took the “granny charger” back and swapped it for a brand new replacement. I would suggest that you call the dealers and complain and say you think it’s unsafe…………. And request a replacement under warranty. I now have a Mini Electric and the granny charger looks very similar but I’ve never needed to use it as I have free charging locally and I now have a Zappi home charger that right now is charging the Mini using energy generated by my solar array. Over on the Mini forums it’s been advised NOT to use the granny charger as your only means of home charging as really they are overloaded trying to charge a 29kw battery but that shouldn’t be an issue with your PHEV as the load for charging isn’t as great.

I've emailed the local LR dealer, lets see what they have to say. I don't think its temperature related as there is a temperature warning light but that never illuminates. Current: MY22 P400e SE

I had the occasional red warning light on the charging adaptor, at the time the dealer said it only had a 1-year warranty as not part of the car, so no replacement under warranty
The issue I experienced, seemed to be from the moisture in the plug(car side). No overheating whatsoever.
Ended up getting a 3-phase 22kw Zappi, only to find out this car only charges on one phase only(with Type2 cable), due to the connection at the car.(2 out of 3 phases of Type 2 connector are plastic blanks)...
at least the charging time is now only 3 hours and no more dealing with those faults...

I bought it as I wanted a 10m cable and the standard one is only 5m. Never had a problem with it, either with the Mini or the RR.

What exactly do these cables do? I am not an EV user, but surely the car contains all the gizmos to plug it into your domestic socket?

The OP shows a "special socket" grey with a green car sign. I recently bought a house (in France) where the previous owner home charged his mercedes and it has what looks the same socket installed. It's just a 13A standard domestic socket connected to a dedicated breaker in fusebox. It's nothing special at all, I connect my pressure washer on that socket.

One day I do plan to buy a fairly small EV and certainly don't expect to have to buy additional charging devices. So what's all of this for?

No, the PHEV Defender comes as standard with only the DC power cable to connect to a commercial charging station or home wallbox.

If you want to connect to a standard 13amp domestic socket you have to purchase the optional cable which includes the transformer/inverter to convert a 220V AC domestic into a DC supply for the car.

Before buying the car I read on a number of forums that it was advisable to install a specialist socket for charging EV from your domestic 220v supply. However, I have since used any number of standard domestic sockets to charge the car and have never had an issue. Current: MY22 P400e SE

Had a few granny leads over the years and the odd issue like you describe I fixed mine, it was the communications pin having corrosion on it. It’s the smaller gauge pin, the granny charger basically has the job of turning the mains supply on and off to the car and communicates via that pin. The actual charger is onboard the car for AC charging. There are certain safety conditions that need to be met before the car gives the signal to the granny lead to turn on the AC supply such as earth present, temperature etc. if it doesn’t meet all the criteria you get the fault light.

Contact cleaner could help if the pins look a little grubby or corroded. 110 MY23.5 X Dynamic HSE

Hi Ritson, interesting and thanks for explaining. Since home charging at night does look like an attractive and thus common activity for EV owners, one would expect this cable to be a standard issue with the car.

I would consider an EV with maybe max 50km daily range dedicated for shopping, commute, kids, etc. I would buy used and park on private land with simple plug in the wall, possibly with some timer for night charging. Most EV on the market are way overkill for what I need. I am think more VW UP! Electric which has now been discontinued. Buying used that granny lead would probably be included.

It’s a pricey piece of kit but the JuiceBooster 2/3 are awesome all-in-one charging kits! Very happy with mine

Mine came standard with the 240v granny charger and the Type 2 AC charging cable for public charging, but no DC cable.
