My original water pump, though it did not leak, had lots of play in it with the belt removed. My noise came from the pump blades rubbing the main housing that the pump bolts onto. Changed the pump and the noise went away, though the old pump never leaked a drop of coolant. Dennis M

its either that or a water pump thats gone very noisy and rough, hoping its the alternator as ive just had the water pump done
I had the exact same problem a few days ago, suddenly started making a horrible rumbling noise. I couple of miles later the engine conked out with smoke coming out of the alternator. I had to be recovered. The bearings had gone on the alternator and I had to get a new one fitted.
There were tell tale signs in the engine bay, lots of silver metal filings! I ended up getting a pattern copy alternator for about £70. A genuine was over £500 . Another option is a genuine reconditioned for around £150ish. If it hasnt gone already then I guess it soon will, so buy a replacement now!
