Red Defender 90
After a lifetime lusting after a Defender I have finally joined the club Very Happy with this red 2011 Defender 90 TDCi

Looks good on the surface, but it has covered 140000 miles, the chassis and bulkhead are good but it is a little tired otherwise so is something of a project.

    Heating directional controls non functional
Heating cold blend, doesn't really like that to do that
Interior courtesy lights front and back non functional
Leaks into cabin, many Sad welly's required
Drive line lash and clonks absolutely horrendous, requires the delicacy of a terrorist negotiator to achieve smooth progress
    Suspension control, non existent
Steering - seems to have a ditch finding pull into the hedge
Steering wheel, needs re-orienting to be cock on
    incontinent gearbox\transfer case
    Dents and dings many
and the screen wash does not seem to know the location of the windscreen

The good news is that it still pulls like a train and on my FIA approved test track Wink achieved a heady 75mph at the speed check. Some way down on my Subaru but I'll take that as it was still pulling.

So from reading the forum nothing that unusual really and already the forum has proved an invaluable resource and I have many threads followed and have already fixed couple of easy items, replaced the heater controls, sorted the front courtesy lights and diagnosed the issue with the courtesy light activated by the rear door.

It's booked into my local specialist Salop 4x4 to sort out the gearbox\transfer case, drive line lash and clonks, I'll probably look at getting the dampers replaced at the same time and whatever bushes etc on the suspension are beyond their best.

The goal at this stage is to get the drive line, suspension and steering sorted so that it drives well and the interior fully functional and dry, that last one is probably a little optimistic Laughing

Welcome to the "Club"

I got my 1994 Defender 90 back at the beginning of October and have had so much help (even with basic questions).

Fantastic Forum and so helpful!

If I'd say anything think about layers of security as mentioned above too. If you want a fright how many are stolen visit the "Landywatch" forum.

I thought I would post a quick update.

As I stated in my original post the defender was booked into my local specialist to have a leak on the transfer case sorted and the lash, clonks and knocks in the drive line fixed.

The transfer case issue was a fill plug that was leaking, this has been replaced and sealed correctly and the oil drained and case refilled, worryingly there was some water in the drained oil but we have taken the view for now that we will see how it runs over the next few months, before taking any further action.

The half shafts and drive members have been replaced and this has probably made the greatest contribution to the lash and clonks being removed.

The other area that really needed addressing was the steering, various components have been replaced with everything being aligned correctly and I now have a steering wheel that is straight Very Happy and it is no longer attempting to drag me into the hedge.

So that is a summary of the major work that was carried out, and along with some other bits and bobs it has transformed the driving experience at a very reasonable price, pareto's law at work. I am sure that a whole heap of money on say a reconditioned diff, damper upgrades etc. may have improved matters even further.

For now I am more than happy with the result. 1999 Subaru Impreza WRX Type R STi V5

All hail the Pin!

One of my major bug bears was the fact that the windscreen washer jets were hopeless. Inspection showed that the jets actually had a split where they push fit onto the scuttle mount. (I am assuming that the TDCI fitment is just a push fit, I have read all sorts of about removing dashboards etc.)

Anyway ordered up a replacement pushed it into place and now all I was squirting were the clouds Sad . A little bit of googling and a pin was apparently the tool I needed to adjust the spray. One pin later and I was able to adjust the spread and the angle onto the screen, problem solved Very Happy 1999 Subaru Impreza WRX Type R STi V5

Oh the love is strong, well it has to be given the latest invoice Shocked .

In a previous post I mentioned that the Transfer Case was on probation, the long and short of it is that it had continued to leak on a prodigious scale, after a run the oil would literally be dripping onto the ground Sad . The bullet was bitten, and the decision was made to replace it with a reconditioned unit.

My local specialist also took the opportunity to replace the output shaft and persuaded me that what I needed was a "sports" exhaust. A little more fettling was also done on the front suspension as a follow up on some previous work.

The results are that it is now driving well and the last of the clonks have been banished from the driveline, it feels like it has done 40000miles and not the 140000 miles on the clock, which has always been the goal. And the exhaust? Well, that's just a bit of fun with a deeper note and some noise from the turbo, but not intrusive Very Happy.

What's next, tyres as it has some very old, very worn Continental Cross Contacts on the front that are a little misshapen and some General Grabbers on the back. Vague plan is to keep the existing alloys and colour them black, go up a tyre size from standard and fit some spacers. Tyres wise I am thinking All Terrain All Season as a comprise between road and green laning. Advice appreciated. 1999 Subaru Impreza WRX Type R STi V5
