Yeah I put silicon hoses on mine and flushed my cooler about a year ago. It was my first attempt to solve the black smoke.
Also super cleaned the EGR in an ultra sonic bath.

New MAF and MAP are my next mission next month after payday 😀

Thanks

Kev

These symptoms are very similar to mine, did ye check both hoses and intercooler?

On second inspection, there is a small indentation to the intercooler > turbo pipe where it's rubbed against a bolt (it's also missing the metal wire that wraps around the pipe - would this lead to excess swelling/delay in air delivery to the turbo?)

It doesn't look like this could cause much of an air leak, but I might have a shot at replacing this one as it's on £24 for a replacement before messing around with the turbo - will let you know if it makes any difference

I know you have both checked already, but I missed a fairly big split in mine. The symptoms you both have are so similar to mine in rev range etc. It could well be a boost leak somewhere or other?

Are you able to put your finger through? Or is it just a split to the outer layer of the pipe? I feel (hope) I may have underestimated the damage mine is having to the performance...

Nope, the inner isn't cut so it was still holding some pressure. The turbo must work hardest pulling from 2-3k revs as the smoke would clear up before and after. If I drove fast it never happened. When I would catch up with slow moving traffic I would have to stay in fourth to keep the revs passes 2800 and avoid choking the people behind me with black smoke!

Hi All

This morning I finally remembered to unplug my EGR. Black spoke was totally gone, smooth revs throughout the whole range.
So seems in my case the EGR valve is faulty.

I only have to deice now how to solve it.
- Keep it unplugged and have engine light on
- Replace it with new Valve
- Remap the ECU so the EGR is closed

I'm leaning towards the remap at the moment.

That's interesting. They seem to be more hassle than they're worth

I have read that you can remove the gear cogs inside the EGR so that the flap is permanently closed, then you plug the EGR back in and the ECU "thinks" it is all working properly so does not throw up a code/illuminate the dash light

There are some photos of the gears here https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic40101.html > 110 XS Double Cab

Hi Hank

Agreed more trouble than they are worth, at least for me so far.

Interesting idea about removing the gears but I think it will still throw a fault code.
At least one of my codes was related to the MAF sensor reading since I unplugged the EGR

Seems from the threads the only real long term cure is to remap the valve closed.

Thanks

Kev

Thanks for the update on this kev, I switched out all my hoses and saw no improvement - so I think I may be hitting the same issue as you

Does driving with the egr disconnected cause any issues further down the line? Or just the engine light to show until it's plugged back? I may have a go at disconnecting that today and taking it out for a spin to see if I get the same results

Appreciate all the updates on this - it's been super helpful

I’m still driving with mine disconnected and it’s still great. Engine light comes on after 3 starts. I reset it because I don’t like having it on.
Heading to UK soon so im going to remap it so EGR will be mapped closed.

Let us know how you get on with yours

Took me a while to get to the bottom of this, but finally managed to sort it.

Initially I replaced the egr and vcv hoping that would solve the issue, but I had the exact same symptoms, so I put it down to either the turbo or injectors

I noticed both the cat and turbo heat shield were missing, so I replaced both of those, run a bottle of injector cleaner through the engine and, hey presto, after a solid 400 mile round trip test run, we are running smoke free!

Thanks for all the help & advice

Great result! I wonder how the heat shields effected this, or was it the injector cleaner did the trick?
