The engines differ in that they lack the European emissions control equipment. They had a different designation to the 15P that was standard over here but I can't remember what the letter was. Darren

difference is: no rust on ZA defenders
SCNR ok, so EU emission rules started in 1992 and from 2003 all Diesels have an OBD2 port to check emission parameters. |

I can vouch for that! Here in SA we do not have salted roads, and inland the air is relatively dry. Even 30 year old LR's generally look better underneath than a 5 year old UK one.
