A little rant
I get annoyed when I hear governments putting up various motoring taxes to force us to go "green". They want us to buy electric cars and pay money on top of road tax to drive in to cities. This is unfair.
If the motoring population decided en masse to buy electric cars there are not enough electric cars to supply the demand. I think the extra "green" taxes should not be applied until there are enough electric cars for everyone to change over to. We all paid taxes on our cars when we bought them and the government was glad to take the taxes. There is no point in demonising motorist but let us go on as we are until there is suffient supply of alternative modes of transport to take over.
If 50% of the motoring population went electric tomorrow (assuming the vehicles were there to purchase with the appropriate infrastructure) think of the revenue that would be lost over night and the on going loss in fuel duty. Governments know this is not possible so they pay lip service to the green ideology and continue to fleece the ordinary motorist. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

I think we're being deluded by the whole electric car thing. They're fine for town runabouts or to the neighbouring town for somebody who has their own offroad parking and charging point, but for the rest - totally impractical. And there's no way the government is going to let the road and petrol tax slip through their fingers. It will be recovered by some means, and with a vengeance.

There'll be no driving holidays, no towing caravans. What do you do when you get a phone call telling you that some relative/friend who lives 250 miles away has only a few hours to live, as has happened to me twice in recent years? Your electric car with an optimistic range of 150 miles, without headlights and heating at night won't get you there without lengthy charging stops.

Hydrogen is the only sensible option. But I'm pretty sure that the military and other users will be running petrol and diesel for decades to come.

Its rather ironic that a labour mayor in London, in fact socialist mayors of cities all over the UK and other countries, are implementing systems that effectively clear the roads of poorer people so richer people can use them unfettered by the hoi polloi.
To add insult to injury the poorer motorists still have to contribute to the upkeep of the roads (via vehicle tax) that they can no longer afford to use.

It's supply and demand though. Car makers aren't going to make cars until they know they can sell them. The idea, right.or wrong, is that is government can stimulate demand through subsidy, the industry will ramp up demand to meet the need. Notwithstanding the current supply problems for all types of cars.

With regards to taxation, rest assured there.will be a plan in place that probably involves a switch from fuel duty to road charging. Or, now we are all being rail roaded into smart electric meters, and electric car chargers have to be "smart" there's is no reason an equivalent to fuel duty couldn't be levied on electricity used to charge electric vehicles. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Thumbs Up

The whole ULEZ scheme is a total farce, virtually every scientist in the world agrees that wind direction plays a massive part in emissions. For instance, London has a South-Westerly wind for about 2/3rds of the year with an average wind speed of about 5mph. So after each rush hour, the majority of the vehicle emissions ends up in Essex/Herts within a few hours, with central London being fed with clean air (lower emissions) from Surrey/Hants.

If the ULEZ scheme is actually about emissions, then London should pay Essex/Herts counties, as all the London crap emissions end up there most of the year. The same goes for every city with similar schemes, wind direction is never taken into account. Jumped ship to reliability - Mitsubishi L200

Remember 20 years ago, when the government said go diesel, and the ran the price of diesel up. one lad said about hybrid cars and low tax/ zero emissions, on the 306 for back in 2014, he said all that will change, mark my words. Two years later, he was right. Also i make bits for the Nissans leaf, and i tell you lads now, that car is no where near as popular as the juke and quashi. The may practically double of those to the Leaf. I have seen them come off the line at nissan, So that tell you something about the electric car market. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back
