Gearbox oil swap - using Lidl's 12v pump
A while ago I spotted in the Lidl a 12v oil pum

Today I used it to replace the gearbox oil (MTF94/R380)
I had some old MTF94 so I used this to flush the pump through first.

The pump has a thin clear plastic tube for the oil in from the oil container and a bigger diameter tube for oil out (to the gearbox)

For the input side, I used a thin length of steel rod and cable tied the plastic tube to this to keep it straight when inserted into the oil container.
The other end fitted just fine in the gearbox filler hole.

Being a cool day, I stood the container in a bucket of warm water to aid the flow through the pump.
2.3l of MTF94 took around 8mins to transfer into the gearbox.

There is an on/off switch on the pump so you can stop the pump while under the car.
Attaches via crocodile clips to the battery.

Over all worked well, and easier than my normal method of using 1l containers and trying to get the nozzle into the gearbox without spilling oil. 1999 Defender TD5 110

That looks great. It’s a right faff by gravity > 110 XS Double Cab

I have one of those pumps, I use it for transferring diesel into my tractor, it works well except the thin tube is very curly and it has a mind of its own. I'd try it foir this job, but not sure how I'd clean the tubes out effectively of diesel. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

It is a faff via gravity or even using old 1l oil bottles and transferring 1l at time and squeezing in past the chassis rail.
I used the steel rod with the thin tube cable tied to it to keep the thin tube straight.

I think flushing the pump through with some oil before use will do the job 1999 Defender TD5 110

About a decade ago I bought a set of the Oil Safe containers and the hand pump that goes with them. Excellent gear... Thumbs Up Bit more manual but excellent gear.

Nephew has one of those lidl pumps. It stopped working after he tried to pump some EP90.
Quick check, found a fuse that had blown inside the motor casing, from overload I guess.

Personally I like my cheap manual pump that I got from harbor freight when was travelling in the US. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

I think they have a 3 year guarantee so you may get your £10 back if you can find the receipt.

I have not tried mine yet, but I got it for the same use as the original poster. Perhaps warming the oil may be an idea.

For diesel OK (emptying tank), for gearbox oil it is on the edge. With original thin tube not possible, but after change to thicker tube it "works". But powered from regulated power supply with current limit (8A maximum), not directly from battery. After few axle and gearbox oil changes it is started leaking oil from pump itself. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

Like Dinnu, I use a manual pump. Mine is like a very large syringe, holds 1.5 liters. Zoooooop! and gearbox /tc / diffs are filled. Especially helpful when you want a measured amount.

I am not sure I would use the pump for thicker oils than say a gearbox, but for the gearbox it did the job. Diffs and transfer case I can get to with 1litre bottle.
Still, for the money I paid, it was worth a dabble. 1999 Defender TD5 110
