l tried removing my EGR and it made no noticeable difference to fuel
economy or performance.
So it went back on.

I think that it only really makes a difference if the EGR system is seized or otherwise not working.

just think to bear in mind if you have one of the 6mm ss cap head bolts snap what fixes EGR pipe work in place to the manifold check and double check before refitting the manifold that the threads striped after rethreading them Mad but must be my lucky day as longer 6mm cap head bolts on place and managed fit 6mm nut and even more lucky as one on inside Rolling Eyes
