wiring twin horns, not air
The single horn (300Tdi) has died so thought I would fit a high and low tone snail type. If I just connect them in parallel using the original wires they should work but thought I would fit in a relay.

Rather than run a long wire back to the battery positive I wondered if I can tap into the live feed currently used for the relay to the spot lights, somehwere between the battery and relay?

Apologies if it has been covered already but a search did not quite answer the particular query. Jeff

It's unconventional but there's no reason why you can't as long as the wiring and fuse are sufficient for the load of both the spots and horns being used together. Darren

This post caught my eye, because I could be in more or less exactly the same situation. The old horn might well be original, isn’t working at the moment, and as I’ve written elsewhere is a bit of a “wimpy toot” anyway…!

I do have a lot of additional wiring along the N/S inner wing, for the spots, and the Landreiziger fan mod; and the Optmill wash pump, (all of which I still need to tidy up to my satisfaction) so I don’t really want to add any more spaghetti.

Is it possible just to add the two tone ones to the original wires without any issues? Donald

Yes Donald as this is what i have done with my twin horn set up with no relay and they have been on a long time now with no issue's Very Happy

What is the difference between the single and twin horn? Is the tone you wanted to change or the volume?

I spliced into the fused wire (battery to spot relay) to bring a live feed to the horn relay. What Donald has done is fit the new horns in parallel without a relay, unfortunately I bought horns with a single terminal so could not use the parallel method and following wiring diagrams on the web fitted the new live to 30 (on the relay) , the 2 original horn connectors to 85 and 86 and the new horns to 87. Spots still working but no horn???

According to the tiny wiring diagram supplied with the horns the connections differ in that 1 of the old horn wires goes to 85 and the other to earth, the live to 30 and 86, then 87 to the horns as before. I queried this with supplier and they confirmed the original negative is not connected . Seems strange so will give that a try today.

Lesson - should have checked before ordering that the horns were 2 terminal type! Jeff

That suggests that the new horn is earthed through it's fixing - might be worth a test with a 12v feed to confirm that before going any further.

Assuming that is the case though, you'll still need to connect an earth to either terminal 85 or 86, with the old horn feed to the other, else the relay coil won't work. Darren

Thanks Clayton - that’s more or less exactly what I was hoping to do. So, the 2x live and 2 x earth in your pictures just join onto the existing/standard wiring? I thought I’d try and fit them nearer the front grille, but not sure I’ll have room with the bigger inter cooler…. Question

Jeffers - it was Clayton rather than myself who’s done this, but your post highlights that I need to make sure to get horns with two terminals. It’s the kind of thing I’d probably have overlooked myself. Donald

Rewired according to suppliers instructions still no joy so refitted old horn (without relay) and it did not work! Tried the horn on a seperate battery dierct and low and behold it works.

It therefore seems that it is the stalk failing as previously I would only get one blast and then a weak effort and yet indicators, main beam working but not headlight flasher.

Should had tested horn before messing about- another lesson learnt! Still fancied twin horns though but not with this weird wiring diagram. Jeff

UPDATE Decided to check all connections despite fearing stalk u/s and at the same time tried a live feed to test that the horns were earthed through their fixings as Darren suggested and they are.

Tried replacing the old horn wire that was unconnected (as per the diagram) with the connected one to 85
and magically the horn worked!! I thought it did not matter which one of the old wires I used but there you go.

Auto wiring will never cease to amaze me so now I will have a spare stalk for the future which i am sure I will need. Jeff

Donald, i put the horns there as i have a full size intercooler as well and the horns would not fit in the original place Very Happy 1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up. Keeper.

Both really as the original horn was a bit quite and no one heard it and then i put these on ( got these after GREENI got and fitted these to his landy. I did a search and they have been on for 5 years now ) and people can here me now Very Happy 1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up. Keeper.

Well I spoke too soon about the horns being sorted!

The horns work without any ignition on, OK so far, and the horns work when ignition turned to first position, OK so far BUT when I turn the engine on the horns do not work?

The live feed is taken straight from the battery, fused and through a relay and the horns earth througth their fixings to the radiator frame.

It seems that I am missing something simple here but cannot figure it out, any suggestions please? Jeff
