From the island4x4 link it says 2002 onwards Rover axle. Is a 1999 axle the same as a 2002 onwards? 1999 Defender TD5 110

No, they used the Salisbury axle prior to 2002, so completely different I'm afraid. Darren

Ahh. Is there a single piece halfshaft for a 1999 axle? (off to look) 1999 Defender TD5 110

Beginners question as the first time I've had an issue with my rear end Rolling with laughter

I have about 5-degree free rotation on the rear hub before the drive shaft moves.

I have two part half shafts and replaced the end caps 2000 miles ago with new bearings etc.

Is this likely to be half shafts or worth looking at something else first?

It's very likely to be worn drive flanges, although could be the half shafts, too. Remove the end cap and have a look for traces of rust. You may find that it looks like these:

The one on the left is the old one.

If that's the case then you may get away with new drive flanges, suitably greased. The alternative 'fit and forget' solution is one piece half shafts or HD components as described in this thread. Darren

May I remind recent joiners of the used Discovery 2 one piece rear half shaft option. I paid £40 for a pair, delivered, from eBay, and I've been delighted with them in my 2014 110 van (but no off-roading for me so the fact they're a bit thinner than the Defender ones isn't so important).

Not that I've found. Would love a single piece halfshaft, but can't justify the cost of swapping out the salisbury axle for a more modern one!

I have considered just getting the welder out....

For a salisbury. I reckon if you were to buy brand new shafts and drive flanges, so they were a nice tight fit, then get them properly welded in place, you'd be OK

I've tried over the yers but with worn ones, and the welds often break (OK, my welding probably isn't brilliant either)

Regarding the play in the flange; when I took mine off the other day, there wasn't much play, maybe 3~4mm on each side. possibly slightly less maybe 2~3mm, but it's made a helluva difference to the drive, soooo much nicer now without half as much clunking on power on/off

Just to make sure, does the 300Tdi discovery half shafts fit on the Defender with a rear Rover diff?

Here I have a choice of importing or Bearmach.
Are they good?

I don't do heavy offroading mainly daily driver and overlanding.

yes they will fit. As to whether they're strong enough (especially on a laden 110/130).... there are different part numbers for the 130 and military 110s, so one may assume they're stronger.

But if nothing else some cheapy used disco 300 ones will get you home.

Hi, the items are described as "rear halfshaft which fits Defender 110 models from chassis number 2A638134 (2002 onwards Rover axle)", but from memory the rear of later defender 110 is not a rover but P38, can anyone confirm if the part numbers are correct for puma defender 110?
Thanks
