Lighting Issues
Newbie on here after a seven year break from Landy ownership - now back with a vengeance! ‘97 90 TDi with lighting issues..
RH indicators on with sidelights and vice versa so assumed an earth fault but it has got progressively worse. LH indicator fine with no sidelight interface but RH indicators and sidelights flash fast, get faster then blow the RH sidelight fuse.
Testing the fuses to earth and many f3, f4, f8, f9, f11-f17 appear to have a constant connection to earth - I know lamps are low resistance but would not expect the meter to read 0 ohms.
Any thoughts?

Add temporary use grounds for testing purposes, sometimes readings are good with no load but high resistance when under load.

Emphasis on temporary testing for identifying the issue, and not a permanent fix but once identified then you can fix permanently. Diesels Lives Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️

Not sure if there are LED indicators fitted as this can highlight any earth problems with lighting and would need the adjustable flasher unit. A temporary fix for that problem was to remove the indicator warning light bulb. Jeff

Update
Ok… all earths less than 0.5 ohm to the battery -ve. Tested on lamp connectors with all affected lights (front and rear) disconnected and compared to LHS which works fine. Cleaned up bulkhead earth anyway but had no effect.
Current symptoms are all sides flash when indicating right, all are fine when indicating left. RH indicators come on with sides. Now the hazards have stopped working too as has the fog, but this might be a bulb.
It does have LEDs and has the adjustable LED flasher relay fitted and the dash lamp removed.
I shall study the wiring diags and this forum tonight but all suggestions gratefully received!

Another possible area is the trailer socket if fitted which gets covered in crud etc. if the dash warning bulb has been taken out (not by you) then when the LEDs indicators were fitted they have highlighted the earth problems. Bolt-on-Bits sell a replacemnt dash warning bulb with its own earth and this cured the problem for me. Jeff

Thanks - I have disconnected it so just have a pile of spare cable in the rear tub atm! None of the disconnected cables appear to short. Maybe I’ll just check again tho - thanks for the reminder.

Try cleaning / remaking the bulkhead / chassis loom earth to the transfer box - m8 bolt, right hand side, mid way up the side of transfer box. This has caused multiple electrical gremlins in the past including 300tdi cutting out momentarily when indicating and a host of other strange faults.

Alas it is not the main earth strap. The connections are now as clean as the day it left Solihull including a re-soldered mid-section. I think the local specialist will get a call tomorrow. 🙁

Fixed!!
Studied the diagrams again this morning and identified a suspect earth terminal I hadn’t seen before - C813. This is on the RH side of the transfer box, accessible by removing the driver’s seat. Lo and behold, having removed 20+ years of crud and cleaned the connections - fault is gone!
It has also stopped the hazards messing about. Presumably the hazard relay and/or switch doesn’t like electrons being pushed through it the wrong way.
Anyway, all the earths I’ve found are now clean so hopefully no more issues for a while.
Thanks for all the suggestions.

C813 is the main earth from the chassis / bulkhead loom to the transfer box which is then earthed to the battery through the transfer box earth strap.

I did suggest it to you two posts up

Not on mine it’s not. I did that, on the left side of the transfer box to no effect. That’s a big cable straight from the battery. The one I fixed tonight (C813) is a small one, on the RH of the transfer box with two ring terminals on it; one for the RH indicator circuit and one for the RH sidelight circuit.

Apologies - just reread your post. I assumed it was the main LH one you were talking about. I was probably influenced by many other sites which point to the main earth.

That’s why this forum is so good - only next time I’ll try not to mix my left and right up and not read what I think rather than what’s written.

Hi - an update on the earth fault...

To recap, occasionally there is a fault such that the RH indicator and sidelight circuits are connected. There is no problem with the LH indicator even when the sidelights are on - it is only the RH indicators.

I have noticed that it appears reliably after I have been splashing through a puddle on the LHS of the car which appears counterintuitive given that it is only the RH indicator which is showing the problem. After a few hours/days the fault disappears, presumably as the affected area/joint dries.

I have previously cleaned and re-terminated the earth connection on the RHS of the transfer box, the bulkhead earth and main earth likewise. None of these have affected the fault. I have also found the header behind the dash and this looks fine and should not be affected by splashing anyway.

They are Wipac LED indicators and sidelights and I have installed the earth connection to the indicator lamp and have the correct indicator relay fitted. The installations are the same for both RH and LH.

All thoughts/suggestions are welcome.
