Has anyone had their Defender ceramic coated? I'm thinking about having mine done, if it ever arrives, but is it worth the money Euro 2k??? Thoughts and advice please....

I would happily pay a ceramic coat specialist to have a coating applied but not the LR dealer - there are several types of ceramic coating and some a better then others and last longer, offer better protection and wash well whilst others are not so good so do your homework.
Gtechniq is a good coating but expensive and needs a specialist application so is not DIY. From what I am told the offering from LR is a cheap coating and not applied very well so beware  Gas, Grass Or Ass - Nobody Rides For Free
"UNDERSTEER" ----is when you hit the fence with the front of the car. "OVERSTEER" ------is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car. "HORSEPOWER" ----is how fast you hit the fence. "TORQUE" -----------is how far you take the fence with you. |

Thanks for the advice Japseroony, I'll look for a specialist rather than use the local LR dealer (who i wouldn't trust with a tin of turtle wax)

Mine had a Gtechniq coating before I bought it and you can certainly tell.
I know it can be expensive and products vary considerably but I do intend to redcoat it when it wears off. If your unsure of which to use and how to apply it, YouTube has loads of comparisons and a great starting point for info. Ride like you stole it!! If it's a new car, and you're thinking of ceramic coating it as soon as you receive it, it may well be worth asking your supplying detailer not to clean it ready for your collection.
The detailers I know would far rather get it before someone at the dealership tries to give it a quick polish and invariably adds some light scratches. If you find/discuss with your chosen detailer, they will be able to let you know their preferred option. It does meant that when your (exciting) collection day comes, that it just goes straight to the detailer, but it's worth it in the long run. |

Mine was GTechniq Ceramic coated overall before I had the PPF put on- the GTechniq did not prevent bramble rash and after gaining two parallel tar line scratches along the near side on an off-road day I had a paint rectification done and went with the PPF. I’ve had several cars treated with “ceramic” coatings sold by dealerships - the least impressive was Lifeshine from Autoglym, but the best by far was the Gardex I had on a white Evoque coupe.That coating lasted the three years I had the car and was still good when the car was traded in. The Gardex coating was not applied by the dealership (Lookers Park Royal), the car was sent (in exchange for them using pictures of the car) to the Gardex UK HQ for the full treatment inside and out. They had the car from delivery from the factory for 4 days before it was returned to LPR. Most of the coatings I’ve tried on cars have required annual top-up treatment when you read the small print in the warranty too, the Gardex didn’t but they did supply a car wash kit with a bottle of Gardex polish.
Note - it is normal if you have the PPF to apply ceramic coatings AFTER putting the film on, not before. Fitted the film was more of a “shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted” decision for me. I’m really pleased now that I went down the film route. I made this little video in early June after a drive around some of the lanes in The Lake District with 2 other New Defenders. The lead Black 110 has also been PPF wrapped. After return home all the car needed to clean off all the bird sh*t and dust was a garden hose and microfibre cloth gentle wash, no pressure washer, there were no tears at all in the film. Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come 2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed! |

Thanks for all the advice everyone.... taking all in to consideration and the limited options available here, unless I want to drive 500km to Paris, I think I'm going to go with the protective film. Xpel doesn't seem to be available here but there is a french made equivalent, Hexis Bodyfence https://www.bodyfence.net which seems to offer the same protection

There are a few makers of similar - of course the greatest selection are in the US of A which is a bit of a hike to get your film from!
