Bulk oil purchase
call me tight Very Happy

can't believe the cost of oil. I'm thinking about buying bulk - I'm not overly concerned about the spec of the oil being exactly as stated in the manual as I've not seen any adverse effects for the last 100+k. I work on the basis I don't unduly stress the engine and I tend to do oil swaps earlier than normally stated.

any recommendations for buying in bulk to keep costs down - I'm thinking 20ltrs or perhaps even 205 ltrs?

Thumbs Up

Costco used to do the 20l drums for good price, I haven’t been in for over a year though. OpieOils might be the other place to look. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

LRT lubricants in Burscough. 20l fusch cube. I buy this and a 1L bottle to give me three oil changes on my puma 110. Last time was about £70. https://shop.lrt-lubricants.co.uk/products...-lube-cube

20l 25l can be had for better prices. I have a 205l drum for the generator lubricating oil. It is a pain as is far to heavy to move on your own. 1995 Defender 110 CSW

Ahh. You don’t need low saps.
Normally c1 for the puma engines is about £50 - £60 a change so the 20l cube I copied above is a significant saving. I use the stuff from Costco in my air cooled vws and change it regularly because it’s so cheap.

I guess your bulk is a very different type of bulk

I could be tempted to buy 205 ltr drum but not without understanding what I'm buying ie the spec etc and of course there would need to be a financial incentive.

So if you bought a 205l drum, at x (7?)litres a oil change and 1 oil change per annum, that's 29 years.

The question should really be how many years do you have left in that body of yours?

I hadn't really done the maths - I see you point however it would serve 3 or 4 motors one of which if I'm not mistaken takes 10 ltrs so perhaps down to 10 years....hmm. that still quite a lot.

I've got 3 push bikes. so I guess I use a bit on the chains Confused

It's always surprising when you buy in bulk before buying doing the maths; been caught out many times myself but sometimes there's a intangible benefit to just knowing you have it in stock. Thumbs Up

if you get the 205 litre drum, I would prob place a bet that within the year you will be moving house and need to work out how to move this massive drum of oil that recently got delivered. Its always the way. Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.

5 months after starting the search I found it, and here is the details
