Obviously check with Pete to make sure info is still current but he advised me to run standard map with new engine and then apply it after first oil change. I have the uprated intercooler but I don't think it makes any difference either way. WARNING. This post may contain sarcasm. |

I have a BAS intercooler fitted to my 2.2 Puma 90. I fitted before doing any remapping just to see what the difference was. For me there was a small but noticeable difference in performance particularly in low end smoothness and delivery. Which made it more drivable around town. There was also a small gain in fuel economy. I have subsequently had an IRB (Porny) 'mild' remap installed circa 140 bhp and I'm very happy with the results.
As a stand alone performance upgrade I would say it is not worth doing. However it's all about marginal gains if you are doing it as part of upgrading your truck the BAS intercooler is a quality item. |

There was a big thread on this a while back, I posted engine temp differences with larger intercooler fitted. Cheers

Had our map & Pete’s intercooler 2 years now. When I asked Pete he said general use no but if towing or over landing in hot climates which will increase the load / stress on the engine definitely. What with the map / intercooler / nugget stuff air box & Naka rai I’m pleased with our set up.

I think it’s worth doing the intercooler if going for a remap. I did the remap only initially and was doing a lot of motorway driving (and pushing her a fair bit) and temperatures were running high. That could have contributed to some turbo and manifold warping issues.

Recently had a BAS intercooler fitted to my '08 90.
While there are not obvious performance improvements there are subtle ones. For example, I use the same stretch of motorway regularly and would hit the speed limiter without flooring it on certain sections (e.g., downhill) . Post intercooler this happens a lot more regularly and without targeting a speed, don't need a hill to help nor cars in front creating a draft to sit in, it just happens by having a lazy foot. Clearly not very useful for the more law abiding as could always get to 70 without drama or thinking about it. But some tangible improvement nonetheless. |

Fitted a bas intercooler to my defender! i initially thought that it made a difference form pulling low down in the rev range, after having my remap adjusted for the intercooler she pulls much harder and keeps the temps lower!
Was a much tighter fit than i thought, did have to modify my slam panel supports to clear the intercooler! |
