Roof tents are not normally able to take the weight of a canoe so roof bars would be needed to hold the boat on the roof above the tent, and the boat would need to be removed prior to popping the tent open, then loaded again before moving off. .
another alternative would be to have a trailer - but that is not always a good compromise due the issues that go with having a trailer. The use of a stand alone tent may help but these need erecting and dismantling each time you want to stop. We have a pop top roof which works well with the canoes and when camping - but its about double the price for a roof tent... There are several types of pop tops -Each with their own pros and cons - ours is ‘X-Vision-X’ and is german build and fitted.

You could also try an Oztent which is quick to erect ( not 30 seconds as they claim as that does not include the guy lines)
I carry my canoe and Oztent Rv-3 on the roof (side by side) and I have three Flatdog roof bars to handle the job. Reason I need three is I have two at each end for the canoe and one in the middle as the Oztent is not long enough. I know I could have just had the two bars but I prefer the canoe to be tethered near the ends as for shorter journeys it saves me tying down the front and back also |

I was going to say the Autohome Columbus Variant is a good bit cheaper, but was surprised to see they are £2,700 now.
Still a good tent and can be fitted with roof bars, depending on the weight of your canoe. Very quick to set up and put away. https://www.4x4overlander.com/product/auto...ent-small/ |

Speak to Dara at Tuff-Trek, he was really helpful when I purchased my tent from him, was on the phone to him for ages going through all of the options and pros and cons of them
I have recently got one his overland series but debated the Alucab and the Bundutop as I wanted an aluminium shell one instead of fibreglass |

Just fitted a bundutop roof top tent. Very roomy, quick to erect and put down 30s. Not suitable for loads on the top though

+1 For Tuff-Trek overland series roof tent, with the roof bars it can also take light loads. Very happy with mine, we’ll thought out and very quick to put up and take down. That tuff trek overland tent looks very similar to the bush company alpha. Nice.

That of course is an option, but I’ve camped numerous times before and am not keen of “on the ground” for several reasons. Mainly grass massively increasing condensation. After a couple of days, no matter how I air a tent, the whole lot feels damp. I’m hoping that on a roof will remove half this dampness.
A second reason is to have a super quick up and down and minimise luggage in the boot. Third reason is I’ll be safe from killer rabbits and hedgehogs up high. But a ground tent is a fraction of the cost…… probably 1/10. |
