As with aluminium,it's a slightly different painting process,probably not as diy friendly as alloy even, it needs a plasticiser before applying paint,which allows the paint to flex with the considerably more flexible panel.Few car manufacturers use plastic panels Citroen and Landrover (Freelander front wings, I believe) are the only ones I know of.But a "normal" finish can be achieved, again it will depend on the skill of the painter/finisher. Pov.spec,ftw. 2006, 110,TD5.

I've got an O/S front wing made of plastic.... Fits absolutely fine, and thanks to a skilled painter you would never tell the difference. An engine to TDi for!

Old thread but I am facing the same question, so here we go: What's the general consensus on outer wings (for a 30+ years old One Ten), aluminium panel or ABS plastic skin? Plastic has come a long way and is at least tempting... are they a straight fit? I was once told that I may need to elongate some of the mounting holes where it bolts to the rest of the wing. Is there any real world experience? Also, would it be easier to spray an ABS plastic wing using something like Raptor U-Pol for example? Thanks Philippe |

In my opinion, the wings give some rigidity / support to the bulkhead. I cannot see the bulkhead to be rigid enough with just the bolts to the outrigger, and the plates bolted to the footwell. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Can’t be much added support Dinnu. I had mine off not long ago and they are a wobbly flimsy affair only held with small bolts and screws. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Recently I removed the wings off a Td5, and the bulkhead tilted back quite considerably, at least enough to make the door not shut nicely any more. And the roof was still on!! Hence my thinking.

Good point, do you think the ABS plastic outer wings provide much less stability for the bulkhead than the aluminium panels? The rest will be aluminium anyway.
Did anyone actually try them? Personally, I never saw one out there in the wild ... |

Sorry, this is sacrilege. If I unknowingly bought a defender with a plastic outer panel I'd be pretty upset to say the least.
It's bad enough with some land rovers having reproduction alu panels missing their spot welds! |

Slightly different question:
Are the corner cappings available anywhere in plastic? Mine were resprayed once under warranty but will need doing again in the next year or so. They don't appear to have any structural function so would be ideal in plastic. Probably small enough to do in a 3D printer. |
