Land Rover Legends - 2021
I paid a visit to Land Rover Legends today, at its new location at Thruxton motor racing circuit. The location was a bit meh, to be honest. No where near as atmospheric as Bicester and also suffered from the constant drone of motor racing in the distance. Still, as always there were some fascinating vehicles on display.

There were military vehicles like the pink panther and its successors:

Oddball vehicles like this Swiss forward control fire appliance:

What looks much like an Ag Rover but is actually a later one off build:

A beautifully restored IIB forward control:

Some blue light vehicles:

A couple of minor celebrities - the Series I 'Her Majesty' of IslandRover from Instagram and the latest incarnation of Nick Dimblebys 100 inch 'TEW':

A fleet of Camel Trophy vehicles:

And the king of them all:

Range Rover chassis no.1, formally on display at Gaydon but now owned by the Range Rover Register:

A whole host of V8 prototype loveliness (most curtesy of the Dunsfold Collection):

Oh, and some second hand stuff:

The V8 in the Trophy sounded wonderful and the whole vehicle rocked on its suspension when the throttle was blipped. I can't see it fairing well in a South American jungle, though.

Inexplicably, a good number of these vehicles and others were then paraded around the racing circuit, which of course meant they were out of site for the majority of the time Rolling Eyes It was quite funny watching the safety car trying to drive slow enough for some of the older vehicles to keep up though.

As is often the case with these sorts of events, the car park can be as fascinating as the displays. These are a few that caught my eye.

A nicely original and unmolested 90:

101's are always guaranteed to turn heads:

There was this Shocked

Parked right next to me was this rare 90SV:

This very early 90 was rather special, complete with its original 2.25 petrol engine. I got chatting to the owner who confessed that he didn't quiet realise what he'd bought but had since been advised (by julian Shoolheifer, no less) to NOT restored it!

This Heritage 110 was nice:

As was this well used Dormobile:

There were a few new Defenders kicking around at the back of stands and on the LR display, predominantly in varying shades of grey and brown, but I did spot this smart looking one on the car park:

TEW is Nick Dimbleby's rebuilt 100inch

I cant find a picture of the original vehicle but i used to see it near Ashtead many moons ago.

It was a Range Rover chassis, with Series body work, big lift and 35 inch General Grabber Mud Terrains, painted NATO green. A weapon.

Pretty certain that it was rebuilt by Frogs Island 4x4 to look as it does now.

Great range of photos Thumbs Up

TEW is a veritable triggers broom. It started out as a Series/Range Rover hybrid in green and has been rebuilt a couple of times. Darren

I made it down yesterday and totally agree with your comments about the venue.

I just don’t think the layout of Thruxton works for the event. Bicester was perfect with everything being adjacent - camping, car park, clubs, vendors, and the hangar.

It seemed as though it was also a much smaller event, but I hope that’s only because of Covid.

The main thing is that it has put it on the agenda for 2022. Charlie

Some very interesting vehicles there, and your photos look top level.

Was this on portal axles?

Great pictures and thanks for sharing for those of us who couldn’t make it. I hope this event would return to Bicester in the future.

Thanks. No, just regular axles under this one. Darren

They all look well turned out. Would have fancied visiting that. Always enjoy the sound of motor racing, especially motorbikes. We have booked to go to the gaydon show.

I went yesterday to meet a few people and tbh it felt like a race day with some nice Landy's to look at.

I was drawn to watching the racing, especially the mini's and mk1 Lotus Cortinas going sideways after the chicanes!

I was going to camp in the Landy, but took the bike instead as the A303 on a sunny Saturday is not my cup of tea Laughing

We also went, decided to camp just to have a night away with Mrs Gav, was quite pleasant and refreshing to be able to just wander round and appreciate a lot of different cars without a load of exhibitors selling tat, topped off by amazing weather Instagram; @gavin_walding

Great photos!

But never mind all that rare and glitzy stuff, THIS is what stood out for me:

[quote="LandRoverAnorak"]

This very early 90 was rather special, complete with its original 2.25 petrol engine. I got chatting to the owner who confessed that he didn't quiet realise what he'd bought but had since been advised (by julian Shoolheifer, no less) to NOT restored it!

I am not surprised that Julian S - who lives close to me and I know well - advised the owner not to restore it. (Just remove the chequer plate and fit a galvanised bumper).

Early civilian factory soft top Ninetys are extremely rare, especially unmolested, as they were "special order" from the start of Ninety production.

I am sure other original examples exist, but the one in LRA's photo is the only one I've seen apart from mine.

PS. Note to organisers: please bring Legends back to a more suitable location that has better accessibility for the rest of the Country. (I believe there may be a suitable site at Bicester. Whistle)
