Amazon Rescue
So what are views on this? Just seen some stills on BBC of the collapsed bridge and the size and weight of wagon (a converted Unimog) the couple were driving across it.
Optimistic to say the least!
I'm also a little bemused as to why they had a satphone but called back to the UK, instead of just making contact within Brazil.
More info here

how bad are london roads?

he trained on london routemaster double deckers so his driving skills were well up to mark?

mmmmm... so instead of a land rover experience training day i should drive round london in a bus to give me the skills to drive a unimog in the amazon......sounds about right

What I can't work out is why the relatives called the UK Coastguard...not exactly who I would call to rescure a crashed unimog even in the UK. Glad they got out okay anyway. 2011 110 USW

I'd suggest that the bridge shown in that clip was not the actual one that they drove across. Looks more like archive footage to show the masses what a bridge in the Amazon might look like.

Don't knock it - it worked! Darren

Not knocking it, just curious how they came up with that idea? At least the CG did something, some emergeny services apparently can get shirty if they think its not within their remit. 2011 110 USW

Indeed it's not "the" bridge. On full time TV there was a still of the actual site, with the arse of the truck visible poking up through the wreckage of the bridge......and it wasn't much more substantial than the one in the web page clip.
Still strikes me as odd that they had no in-country plan or overwatch in place and were there, pretty much, on their own.

Looks strange but not uncommon

A lot of overlanders here are more less on their own without too much contact with the locals.
So for them is easy to call back home to solve issues like that or to get information ahead. Probably they didnt have the Rescue N° of the police in Mannaus or other city in Brazil (that you must have indeed) and the easy way was toi go around to UK, a service rescue there that can get in touch with the rescue service in Brazil.

As a LR club here we get in contact with several of them requesting information and, in fact, we try to help them when they had an accident or problems.

Cheers Eduardo
