Can also be the heater duct not sealing to the blower unit. I did a thread on how to fix it a while back.

Here is the link to that post https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic75787.html.

To get the cooling working the best it can , I think it’s a combination of sealing the intake duct, else you are drawing warm engine bay air in when trying to cool, plus adding a mod to ensure the valve closes properly..ie a spring. Perhaps even changing the valve every few years to ensure it is sealing properly.

The alternative is changing the valve for a different type, but that , from what we know is available currently, involves a complex bespoke fabrication. https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic54969...ater+valve

It would be great if one of the companies who design improved versions of defender parts, such as Optimill or design & development engineering etc could come up with a robust solution that works as it should. I’m sure owners would pay a reasonable price for a fit and forget solution that does what it says on the tin.

Sorry the spring was in a paper sweet bag of springs I bought from a proper old fashioned diy shop in Keswick when the return spring on the carb disappeared when I was there in my old Vw beetle.
I experimented a bit with length to get the amount of force just right.

Have you a part number for that bag od springs Rolling with laughter

Did the spring mod, works great. The temperature control knob in the cabin feels more positive/free moving/less forced and the valve arm in the engine bay actually moves all the way to the cold side Thumbs Up 10/10 would recommend

^^^^^^^
I like simple and effective mounting of the spring Hank, I was thinking of fabricating a bracket on the heater bracket to hold the spring horizontally between it and the valve, but your method of using the existing valve mounting screw and the spring bent between it and the valve looks to be sufficiently robust to last.

So what’s the size of the spring hank, and where did you get it ?

Now you're asking. I have one of these type of assorted spring packs in the garage so used an appropriate one

I was wondering if it was just mine or all defenders.
My 2014 Puma blows hot air or hot air.

It will blow cold with the aircon on, but the heater controls do nothing.

To answer your question, no I don’t have this problem with my 2013 SW. when set cold it blows cold even when ac turned off. However when set warm the heat varies enormously depending on engine temperature. I think this is normal. Totally rubbish system but I wouldn’t want it any different. Smile

Thank you folks!

Had a play on Sunday and valve was stuck on hot so all the knob was doing was loosening and retightening the cable.
A quick fiddle freed the valve and now I have both hot and cold air.

I love these forums.

Yes. The internals of the heater valve dissolve over time. If you continue to get the same problem replace the valve. I've replaced mine a few times... My advice - buy genuine. > 110 XS Double Cab
