Thanks, I just watched that with a brew Thumbs Up

I good reminder that you don’t need locking diffs, 35” tyres and terrain response to do some proper off tarmac driving. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Brilliant video. A few thoughts:

1. I think that part of Oz still looks like it's 1972, clothes, haircut and all.
2. LR saved by Toyota Rolling Eyes
3. Gerry McGovern never saw that video when he designed the Defender SUV. Defenders have always been good off road (in the right hands and with the right mods even 'great') but never the best. It was rarely their pure off road ability that attracted users, yet GMcG became obsessed with creating the 'best off roader' which arguably he has. Instead they were chosen for adaptability, usability, flexibility and repirability, all exemplified by this short video. That was the basis for LRs iconic status and the seed of its legacy. No way in a month of Sundays will the owners of the new SUV try such a feat, not for reasons of cost or balls, but simply because the vehicle couldn't be suitably prepared before the trip, such as the flat bed, water tanks under the wheel arch, custom made bumper and winch using aircraft starter motor, and certainly not fixed during it. Blown tyres, axle, tow ball, worn diff, no problem. Nor could they be adapted during the journey such as the removed belts and sealed distributors during the crossing. So instead they've created a great off roader as long as you want to off road on Gerry's terms, in a SUV. He and the design team completely missed 'the point' of the Defender. More's the shame. He didn’t design the Defender, and he certainly didn’t engineer it. No modern car meeting modern standards and requirements could be prepared or repaired in the way you’ve described.

Let's continue that discussion in many of the other threads set up to discuss it.

Let’s leave this one to comment on the video, the Leyland brothers, and other associated issues. Thumbs Up
