Metal on metal grinding sound at 1600-1700 rpm
I have a ridiculously annoying metal on metal sound at 1600-1700 rpm. Took it to EH Douglas and they ‘adjusted’ the turbo heat shield, made no difference so I checked it and pretty much all the rivets were sheared so I’ve removed it to help diagnose. Shearing sound is still there so I checked what I think is the CPS heat shield as a few posts mentioned it. I’ve added a picture of what I think is the CPS heat shield but it looks different to others.

I’ve had the Defender for 2 months now so it’s still under warranty but I’m just trying to fix it myself to save the 2 hour drive back to the dealer.

While I was under there I also spotted oil coming from the transmission, not dripping but definitely collecting, should I be worried or is this usual Defender behaviour.

I would be investigating the oil leak, I don't think it's been leaking that long but check it out.

Thanks I’ll get it back to the garage I think. I wish I could locate the noise though in the meantime.

Perhaps the brake drum is on too tight. Maybe adjust it or the brake cable? I know mine occasionally tensions itself and makes a noise similar to what you described. I give the handbrake lever a good waggle and it does release it. Thumbs Up Monsieur Le Grenadier

I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list.....
