285/75R16
Can anybody who runs 285/75R16s measure across the tread contact patch for me please, i.e. the width of the footprint it would leave on the ground?

Particularly interested in BFG MT KM2 / KM3 and the Cooper Discoverer STT Pro to compare the widths.

I am thinking about getting 285s for the Puma on some alloys, and I recall some of the older BFG sizes having quite a narrow footprint for the section width, but I don't have any available to measure.

Thanks Thumbs Up ---

Wouldn't that be 285mm, regardless of which tyre?

I thought that it was 285 = width in mm, 75 would be % of width as sidewall height - i.e. 213mm in your case of a 75 profile, on a 16" rim?

Ay4alex, it should be that simple but unfortunately it’s not, all manufacturers and tread patterns are quite different

The picture below shows a 255 BFG mud compared to a 265 BFG AT, but there’s a 2 and a bit inch difference in width and not just the 10mm difference on paper

I think the problem here is that the number we all think of as tread width (255, 285, etc.) is actually the section width, which is a different measurement:

The actual tread width can vary between manufacturers and tread patterns. Darren

As per LRA above, tread width, sectional width and overall width are different.

Below is my BFG MT 285 75 16 KM2. It's the 'side knobbles' that give the overall width of 285

No, hence the question. The footprint of tyres relative to their section width varies considerably. I used to run BFG 265/75R16 when they made the original MT KM, the reason I didn't move to the KM2s was that the footprint was about an inch narrower for the same section width! That will suit some terrain like the UK, but not here. Soft peat is quite commonly 5-10 metres deep (or more) so a tyre that will dig down to the hard ground is ... not that effective Laughing

Hank, thanks for the pics, just what I needed for one type. Anybody got a similar image for a 285 KM3 or Cooper? ---

Is anybody able to get a tread/tape measure photo for a KM3 or Cooper similar to the ones above please? ---

I'm running 315/70/16 KM3s.

Just measured up and the actual main tread blocks side to side (i.e. the bit on tarmax) is only 260mm.
As mentioned above, the 315 is the full width of the tyre.
